Getting to know... Christian A. Gutierrez
In this team interview, we get to know another member of the Product Development team, Christian A. Gutierrez .
Tell us a bit about what your role is/what do you do at MFX?
I am part of the Product Development Team, which is in charge of developing the supporting technology and devices for the automation of the MFX bioreactors. My role focuses on product design, including gathering user needs and translating them into feasible and reliable mechatronics solutions, encompassing mechanical, electrical, electronics, and automation systems and subsystems.
Tell us about you/your background - what did you do before joining MFX.
Before joining MFX, I was involved in numerous sectors, being responsible for the engineering design of critical systems for medical robotics, computer vision, industrial automation, and food packaging solutions.
What excites you about the Cyto Engine technology?
Mainly, the possibility of increasing the accessibility of CGT to people for cancer treatments. Additionally, the opportunity to be part of a great team focused on developing novel solutions.

What do you think the future of cell culture looks like?
I believe it is still an undiscovered field with many aspects subject to future investigation. This is precisely where MFX's Cyto Engine technology plays a critical role, allowing scientists and companies to explore beyond the current constraints of available solutions.
Engineering and biology are intersecting more and more, how will this solve some of the challenges of cell therapy?
The interdisciplinary correlation between both fields allows potential users to gather high-quality data with lower variability, translating into higher efficiency in terms of manufacturing. This, in turn, allows for a reduction in production costs and therefore increases access to new treatments for patients based on these therapies.
What do you do when you aren't working?
I usually read about philosophy, explore various art forms, and improve my engineering skillset by engaging in new projects, or maybe you'll find me playing video games. Recently, I learnt how to ride a motorcycle. I also continuously look for the next time I can be with my family in Ecuador.
Tell us an interesting fact about you!
I was born into a family of artists; both of my parents are artists. Contrary to what most people might think, it was growing up in this world that sparked my interest in engineering. When you're on stage in a theatre, you often encounter engineering problems. After exploring three major industry sectors in my professional life, I can say that the problems I have faced share similar challenges to the ones I have seen my parents encounter throughout my childhood.
