Getting Out of Your Own Way: How to Avoid Common Self-Imposed Obstacles

I once had a mentor tell me that if I got out of my own way, I would see how close to success I actually was. I took that to heart and started a deep dive into identifying the self-imposed obstacles I had that were blocking my path to success. Identifying and avoiding common self-imposed obstacles is crucial for personal and professional growth. These barriers, often rooted in our mindset and behaviors, can hinder our progress and prevent us from reaching our full potential. Recognizing and overcoming these hurdles requires self-awareness, deliberate action, and perseverance. Here are strategies to navigate and overcome some common self-imposed obstacles:

1. Overcome Perfectionism

Perfectionism can be a significant impediment to progress. The desire for flawless results can lead to procrastination, a fear of failure, and often an inability to complete tasks. I was guilty of always trying to be perfect, and it was exhausting trying to live up to my own standards!

Strategy: Practice self-compassion and set realistic standards. Acknowledge that making mistakes is an integral part of learning and growth. Break tasks into manageable pieces and celebrate small wins to build momentum.

2. Challenge Limiting Beliefs

We often harbor limiting beliefs about ourselves that undermine our confidence and deter us from attempting new challenges. These could be from comments others have made to us, or untruths we tell ourselves. I had to learn to flip the dialogue in my mind to focus on the positive and realistic and stop allowing the toxic comments of others to live rent free in my head.

Strategy: Identify negative beliefs and challenge their validity. Replace them with empowering affirmations. Work on developing a growth mindset, where you see abilities as improvable rather than fixed.

3. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

You may have heard the saying that comparison is the thief of joy. Comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy and discontent. It’s a skewed lens that often dismisses our unique journey and accomplishments.

Strategy: Focus on your path and progress. Use others’ achievements as inspiration rather than a yardstick against which to measure yourself.

4. Eradicate Procrastination

Procrastination is the habit of delaying tasks that need to be done, leading to last-minute rushes and heightened stress. Failing to plan is planning to fail, and it can hinder or entirely halt our positive progress forward.

Strategy: Implement time management techniques, such as the Pomodoro method or Eisenhower matrix, to help prioritize and break down tasks. Understanding the underlying reasons for your procrastination can also help in tackling it effectively.

5. Reduce Fear of Failure

The fear of failure can be paralyzing. It prevents us from taking risks and venturing outside our comfort zones. I choose to view myself as failing forward, and embracing the growth that comes from every learning opportunity. Failure is inevitable, but how we view it makes a difference in how we respond to it.

Strategy: Reframe failure as a learning opportunity. Start with small risks to build your confidence, and remember that each setback is a step towards future success.

6. Handle Impostor Syndrome

Impostor syndrome is the pervasive feeling of self-doubt and the fear of being exposed as a "fraud," despite evidence of one's competencies. It can be hard to see our value and accomplishments clearly. The best practice is to be patient with yourself, and practice positive self-talk & self-compassion!

Strategy: Recognize your achievements and accept that no one knows everything. Seek feedback, and understand that feeling unsure at times is normal and does not negate your skills or successes.

7. Avoid Burnout

Burnout can occur when we push ourselves too hard without adequate rest, leading to exhaustion and reduced productivity. We cannot be everything to everyone. We have limited resources to navigate each day with, and we need to reserve something just for ourselves.

Strategy: Ensure a healthy work-life balance by setting clear boundaries, taking regular breaks, and engaging in leisure activities that rejuvenate you.

8. Curb Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk can be incredibly damaging, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy where we come to embody our negative assertions. We are not the sum of the worst of ourselves. While it is not possible to be positive 24/7, it is possible to challenge and take control of our inner dialogue.

Strategy: Become conscious of your inner dialogue. Replace negative statements with positive ones and practice positive affirmations.

9. Dispel the Fear of Success

As strange as it may sound, fear of success can be just as debilitating as fear of failure. Success can bring changes and challenges that seem intimidating. It can move us to new places that feel awkward or uncomfortable. Growth begins outside of our comfort zone.

Strategy: Visualize successful outcomes and the steps needed to manage the consequences of success. Embrace change as part of personal evolution.

10. Develop Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is crucial for navigating workplace dynamics and personal relationships. Lack of it can create unnecessary conflict and misunderstandings. There are a multitude of resources you can use to skill up and increase your EQ!

Strategy: Enhance your emotional intelligence by practicing active listening, empathy, and self-regulation. Reflect on your emotional responses and seek to understand the emotions of others.

11. Cultivate Resilience

A lack of resilience can cause us to crumble under pressure or adversity. it is crucial to surround yourself with empathetic and supportive people who can validate you and help you through your challenges.

Strategy: Build resilience by maintaining a supportive network, staying optimistic, and being adaptable to change. Understand that resilience is built over time and through experiences.

12. Manage Time Effectively

Poor time management can lead to stress and the feeling of always being behind schedule. By creating a plan of action, you ensure steps forward to success. You can also identify what success will look like when you reach that finish line. I often set calendar reminders and alarms on my phone to help keep my on track with my goals and priorities.

Strategy: Prioritize tasks, avoid multitasking, and allocate specific times for various activities. Utilize tools and techniques that can aid in managing your time better.

13. Seek Constructive Feedback

Avoiding feedback can result in missed opportunities for growth. I cannot emphasize the power of constructive criticism enough. Make sure that those you go to seeking feedback are trusted individuals with your wellbeing in my mind.

Strategy: Actively seek out and welcome constructive criticism. Approach feedback with an open mind, and use it as a tool for improvement.

14. Maintain a Network

Isolation can limit your opportunities and perspectives. Branch out and connect with others to diversify your network and learn outside of your comfort zone.

Strategy: Build and maintain a professional network. Engage with peers, attend industry events, and stay connected with mentors.

15. Embrace Lifelong Learning

This is the game changer! Complacency and the refusal to continue learning can render your skills obsolete and your career stagnant. Be open to learning and growth can transform your professional trajectory and put you solidly on the path to success!

Strategy: Seek out new learning opportunities, stay updated with industry trends, and embrace change as an opportunity to grow.

16. Nourish Your Physical and Mental Health

Neglecting your health can take a toll on your professional productivity and ability to focus. You cannot be the best you if your aren't safeguarding your well-being.

Strategy: Create and maintain a healthy routine, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices. Taking care of your physical and mental health is essential for sustained professional performance.

  1. Implementing Changes:Reprogramming deep-seated habits isn’t an overnight process—it requires intentional effort and persistence. Start by choosing one or two obstacles to address, and implement strategies to overcome them. Gradual changes lead to lasting transformations.Reflection is also key. Regularly reassess your strategies and make adjustments as needed. Keep a personal journal or work with a coach to maintain accountability.
  2. Learning and Growth:Remember that facing and overcoming self-imposed obstacles is a continuous learning process. Each obstacle you overcome equips you with new skills and knowledge that can help you in future challenges.Celebrate your victories, no matter how small. Rewarding yourself for overcoming hurdles can reinforce positive behavior and motivate you to continue pushing your boundaries.
  3. Seek Support:While self-help is empowering, there’s no need to go it alone. Seek support from mentors, coaches, and peers who can offer advice and perspective. They can help you see blind spots in your approach, offer encouragement, and share their experiences.
