Be Glad Things Didn’t Go Your Way!

Be Glad Things Didn’t Go Your Way!

Whether it’s missing out on a promotion, losing a job, or watching a golden opportunity slip through our fingers, we’ve all been there. It’s easy to feel defeated when things don’t go according to plan. But here’s the truth: sometimes, things not going your way is exactly what you need.

Here’s why.

The Gift of New Beginnings

When the path we thought we were on suddenly disappears, it can feel terrifying. But that’s the beauty of it—disruption brings new beginnings. That job loss? It’s an invitation to reinvent yourself, to explore industries or roles that may have never crossed your mind before. Often, what seems like the end of the road is just a turn leading you to something better.

The key is being able to embrace hope in the midst of the hell you may feel.

Let me share a personal story. In 2011, after nine incredible years in the Navy, I was faced with an ultimatum: either accept orders to Japan or leave the military. My wife had just given birth to our second son, and the orders didn’t allow my family to accompany me. I found myself at a crossroads.

Growing up without a father, I couldn’t imagine putting my own children through the same experience. I didn’t want to miss those formative moments in their lives, nor did I want to leave my wife to manage a toddler and an infant on her own.

I made the hard decision to leave the Navy. At the time, it felt like my career was over, but what I didn’t realize was that this was a new beginning. I was honorably discharged and soon got my first opportunity in the safety industry at a NASA facility. Looking back now, as a sought-after certified professional in my field, I see that leaving the military wasn’t the end—it was the start of something far greater.

Better Opportunities Await

It’s easy to hold onto what’s familiar. But sometimes, we outgrow our old roles, relationships, or environments without even realizing it. The job you missed out on, or the opportunity that passed you by, might have been keeping you from something bigger and more aligned with your strengths. A rejection today could mean a redirection toward something that better suits your potential. Trust that what’s coming is meant for you. You should be making preparations!

Gratitude Outside of the Comfort Zone

Staying in your comfort zone may feel safe, but it doesn’t allow for growth. Setbacks force us to step outside what we know, to adapt, and to learn new skills. When you’re pushed out of your comfort zone, you’re also pushed to evolve. And it’s in that evolution where real progress happens.

When life doesn’t go our way, it’s tempting to only focus on the loss. But what if we could find gratitude in those moments? What if the closed door led to an open window with an even better view?

Reflect on your past. How many times have things not worked out, only to lead to something greater? The more we learn to embrace the unexpected, the easier it becomes to see life’s detours as stepping stones to better destinations.

Next time things don’t go your way, remember that every setback is a prerequisite for a comeback. There is value in the unknown, and there is growth in discomfort. Be glad things didn’t go according to plan—because it might just be the best thing that ever happened.

Share this with someone to reignite their passion and drive.
