'GLG is the best in the industry,' former SBI Card CEO Vijay Jasuja
Vijay Jasuja is a top banking, financial services, and insurance executive with more than 40 years of leadership experience across Indian and global markets. His career with the State Bank of India spanned more than 30 years and multiple key roles, including CEO of SBI Card , India’s largest pure play credit card.
He currently serves as director at Punjab National Bank , focused on its credit card business. Vijay sits on the boards of both PNB and fintech platform Stashfin and has provided insight to some of the world’s largest financial services firms, as both independent advisor and GLG Network Member. Since 2019, he has helped GLG clients better understand the complexities of the Indian credit card market.
We spoke with Vijay to learn about his experience as a GLG expert.
What’s it like being a GLG Network Member?

What unique value do you provide GLG clients that they can’t find anywhere else?
In the Indian market, the credit card business normally operates within the banks. SBI Card is unique because, while it’s linked to SBI, it’s run as a separate entity. Since I’ve headed a credit card company as an independent business for such a long time, my expertise and understanding of the business (e.g, how to acquire new customers, grow, and make the business profitable) is much deeper than that of a banker. For any client who wants to take a deep dive into the credit card market in India, my experience makes me one of the best people to talk to.

How do you prepare for calls?
I usually do very little because I’m already active in the credit card market. I keep myself updated on information related to credit cards in India – anything new happening, headlines, changes in the market, what trends are unfolding – so I always have an overall, up-to-date perspective. For highly specific questions, I will do some research.
What do you find rewarding about working with GLG?
At this stage in my career, remaining engaged and active is important. GLG’s clients include very big companies and investors, and the kinds of questions they ask encourage you to apply yourself and continue gaining knowledge.
There are always more knowledgeable and experienced people out there. Interacting with them helps you grow professionally. If you only talk to people with less experience than you, you may think you’re the smartest, most knowledgeable person in the industry – and your growth will stop.
