The Global Entrepreneurship Week has kicked off

The Global Entrepreneurship Week has kicked off and African Bank is promoting entrepreneurship through its initiatives that support the growth and development of small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs) across South Africa during Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). Here is a recap and breakdown of the key events and activities planned for the rest of the GEW week:

Financial Literacy Workshop in Cape Town: The week kicked off with a comprehensive financial literacy workshop at The Winchester Boutique Hotel in Cape Town. This session provided SMMEs with valuable insights on various growth opportunities, including those in technology, transport and logistics, agriculture, and energy. The workshop also addressed critical topics like financial growth strategies, fostering a growth mindset, and managing personal finances as a business owner. It was great to see the support of the Western Cape Government, which attended the event, showing their commitment to nurturing the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Care Packs Handover

As part of our commitment to serving vulnerable communities, we visited The Haven Shelter to hand over hygiene packs to them as they look after and provide shelter for over 1400 people who are homeless and on the streets throughout Western Cape. Their Shelters provide an opportunity for people living on the streets to access safe accommodation but also support them to re-integrate into communities and access opportunities for work. African Bank is proud to have provided these care hygiene packs which will assist their work in providing dignity to those who need it the most.

Cape Town Incubation Hub Launch: In collaboration with 22 On Sloane, African Bank launched 22 On Sloane Cape Town hub focused on promoting innovation and empowering businesses. The hub aims to cultivate a community of capable businesses, helping entrepreneurs scale and thrive. This event was attended by a broad group of ecosystem partners, including the MMC of the City of Cape Town, Alderman James Vos, The Chairperson of SEFDA, Nonzunzo Makhanda, The Acting DDG: Strategic Economic Accelerators and Drivers at the Western Cape Provincial Government, Ilse van Schalkwyk, Seda Western Cape Provincial Manager, Alex Qunta, the Senior Regional Manager of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, Ms Lieza Blom and the CEO of the South African Future Trust, Nico Jacobs and various corporate and philanthropic organizations. The presence of Jonathan Ortmans, President of the Global Entrepreneurship Network, further underscores the global significance of this partnership.

Upcoming Workshops Across South Africa: African Bank’s commitment to empowering SMMEs continues with a series of workshops in different regions over the coming days:

  • Bloemfontein (20 November): Workshop at Ilanga Estate Hotel.
  • North West (21 November): Orion Hotel and Lodge.
  • Limpopo (22 November): Fusion Boutique Hotel.
  • Mogale City (Township Workshop): Chief Mogale Hall in Kagiso, providing specific support to township-based businesses.

Through these workshops, African Bank is taking a proactive role in not only equipping entrepreneurs with the tools they need to grow but also fostering a vibrant ecosystem for SMMEs to thrive across various sectors. The diverse topics covered in the workshops, ranging from financial literacy to scaling strategies, will help equip entrepreneurs to face the challenges of scaling and growing their businesses.

This initiative is a wonderful example of how public-private partnerships and community-based support systems can come together to drive sustainable economic growth.
