Global Hunger Stalled: A Pressing Challenge for Corporations

Global Hunger Stalled: A Pressing Challenge for Corporations

The UN's latest report paints a bleak picture: global hunger is not only persisting but worsening. The ambitious goal of eradicating hunger by 2030, set a decade ago, seems increasingly out of reach. Conflicts, climate change, and economic crises, coupled with deep inequalities, create a challenging scenario that demands an urgent response from the international community, especially large corporations.

It is unacceptable that, in the 21st century, one in eleven people worldwide is going hungry. The stagnation in the fight against food insecurity is a collective failure that requires a deep reflection on our priorities and actions. Large corporations, as powerful economic actors, have a crucial role to play in this context.

Key Questions for Large Corporations:

  • What is your commitment to global food security? Beyond profits, companies need to recognize their social and environmental responsibility.
  • How do your operations impact the availability and access to food in vulnerable regions? It is essential to assess the supply chain, from production to distribution, identifying and mitigating negative impacts.
  • What concrete actions are being taken to promote sustainable agriculture and climate resilience? Companies can invest in innovative technologies, sustainable farming practices, and projects that strengthen family farming.
  • How can companies contribute to reducing inequalities and access to nutritious food? It is necessary to promote the inclusion of small farmers, strengthen cooperatives, and invest in nutrition programs.
  • What is the role of companies in building fairer and more equitable food systems? Companies can lead initiatives to reduce food waste, promote healthy eating, and strengthen the governance of food systems.

The stagnation in the fight against hunger highlights the need for a more systemic and collaborative approach. Companies, governments, and civil society need to work together to transform global food systems. It is necessary to go beyond point actions and invest in long-term solutions that promote sustainability, equity, and food security for all.

The global hunger crisis is a complex and multifaceted challenge. Large corporations have the power to transform this scenario and build a more just and sustainable future. It is time to assume responsibility and act with urgency.
