GLOBAL RIFLE SALES ON THE RISE 📈

GLOBAL RIFLE SALES ON THE RISE 📈

Rifles, alongside shotguns and handguns, remain a core product category in gun shops worldwide, providing consistent revenue streams for retailers. With increasing global demand for hunting and shooting, the rifle market continues to offer tremendous opportunities for growth and expansion. In this edition of Gun Trade Insight we examine the current state of the rifle market and how it is evolving around the world.

SURGING GAME POPULATIONS DRIVE DEMAND

Across various regions, populations of game animals such as deer, wild boar, feral boar, and foxes are on the rise, expanding into areas where they were previously scarce or non-existent. Hunters in locations that have never experienced significant numbers of roe deer, muntjac or wild/feral boar are now finding these species invading their territories. This increase in game populations is good news for the rifle market, as more hunters are looking to control these growing numbers. Consequently, demand for rifles, scopes, and ammunition has surged in these areas as hunters seek the right tools to manage and harvest game more effectively.

INNOVATIVE CARTRIDGE DESIGNS LEAD THE WAY

While traditional American calibers such as .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .308 Winchester remain popular worldwide, the U.S. market continues to innovate with new cartridge designs. For instance, Nosler recently introduced the 28 Nosler, which boasts the title of the most powerful 7mm cartridge commercially available on the market. This is a significant development, as both the 26 and 28 Nosler rounds have garnered attention among ballistics enthusiasts and hunters alike.

As 2024 marks Hornady’s 75th year in business, part of that celebration is rolling out several new products. The company’s headline product is the new 22 ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge), a .22-caliber centerfire load that offers .22-250-level performance in a rifle cartridge that performs flawlessly in AR-15 rifles. This cartridge will certainly draw the attention of hunters, but it will also attract long-range shooters who want the 22 ARC’s combination of superb ballistic performance and low recoil.

In contrast, European manufacturers have been relatively quiet in terms of new cartridge designs, with the notable exception of the Blaser Magnum family. Despite this, classic European calibers such as the 7x64, 8x57IS and 9,3x62 remain in circulation, appealing to traditionalists and hunters with a deep connection to these tried-and-true rounds.

THE RISE OF MODULAR RIFLES: A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL SOLUTION

As hunting and shooting practices evolve, so too does the demand for rifles that can cater to a variety of different needs. In Europe, the trend toward modular rifles is reshaping the market, with more hunters gravitating toward multi-functional firearms. These rifles allow shooters to easily swap out barrels, calibers, stocks, and optics, transforming one rifle into a versatile platform capable of handling a wide range of hunting scenarios.

This modular approach offers tremendous benefits, particularly in regions where gun ownership is restricted to a limited number of firearms. For example, a hunter can have a .243 Winchester set up for stalking, a powerful 7mm magnum for mountainous terrain, and a 9.3x62 for close-range work, all based on the same rifle platform. This flexibility allows for better familiarity with the rifle, improving marksmanship and overall performance.

Moreover, hunters increasingly prefer investing in one premium, adaptable rifle rather than purchasing multiple entry-level firearms. This trend not only supports sales but also encourages further add-ons such as bolts, barrels, optics, and accessories, contributing to long-term customer engagement.

Despite the growing market for AR-platform and semi-automatic rifles, bolt-action rifles continue to dominate global rifle sales.

THE GROWTH OF WOMEN IN RIFLE SHOOTING

One of the most exciting developments in the rifle market is the increasing participation of women in both hunting and shooting sports. More and more women are purchasing rifles, prompting manufacturers to respond with firearms tailored to female shooters. Companies like Sauer and Merkel are leading the way, producing rifles specifically designed with women in mind, featuring customized stock dimensions and ergonomics for improved fit and comfort.

This shift represents a growing opportunity for retailers to expand their offerings and cater to this expanding demographic. With many women entering the sport and seeking high-quality, precision rifles, the industry is witnessing an increased demand for firearms that are not just lighter or smaller but are purpose-built for the female shooter.

BOLT ACTIONS REMAIN THE MOST POPULAR

Despite the growing market for AR-platform and semi-automatic rifles, bolt-action rifles continue to dominate global rifle sales. The simplicity, reliability, and accuracy of bolt-action rifles make them the top choice for a wide range of shooters, from hunters to precision marksmen and -women. Manufacturers consistently focus on enhancing bolt-action platforms with new features, including improved triggers, barrel options, and modular designs.

Semi-automatic rifles follow as the second most popular option, favored for their rapid follow-up shot capabilities, especially in hunting scenarios that demand quick action. Lever-action and pump-action rifles, while historically significant, now account for only a fraction of sales in most regions worldwide, although the retain a big following in others.

KEY FACTORS INFLUENCING RIFLE PURCHASES

When it comes to selecting a rifle, price often remains the most important factor for buyers. Competitive pricing can make or break a sale, particularly in markets where economic conditions are uncertain. Following price, brand loyalty also plays a crucial role, as consumers tend to gravitate toward well-known, trusted brands that have earned a reputation for quality and reliability.

Accuracy remains an essential consideration for many shooters, especially in markets where long-range shooting is a priority. Technical features, while less critical overall, still appeal to a niche audience of enthusiasts looking for rifles with cutting-edge innovations, from adjustable triggers to precision-machined barrels.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND IN THE GLOBAL RIFLE MARKET

The global rifle market continues to present a wealth of opportunities for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. As game populations grow and hunting regulations evolve, demand for rifles and related equipment remains strong. Additionally, the ongoing trend toward modularity and innovation in cartridge design will likely fuel further growth in the coming years.

By staying attuned to the latest trends and technological advancements, the industry can continue to capitalize on the expanding global interest in hunting and shooting sports. From catering to the needs of female shooters to offering modular rifle platforms, the market remains poised for significant advancements, ensuring long-term success for businesses across the firearm industry.
