Gontse Moatshe's Journey to Stability and Growth with SEF

Gontse Moatshe's Journey to Stability and Growth with SEF

Gontse Moatshe, a 24-year-old from Phomolong, Modimolle, Limpopo, has seen his life take a positive turn thanks to the Social Employment Fund (SEF). Living with his family, including his mother, three sisters, and a young nephew, Gontse has become a vital support for them.

When Gontse joined SEF in July 2022 during Phase 1, he didn’t realize how much it would change his path. With his earnings from SEF, he managed to save enough to start his own kota (fast food) business, a dream he had long held. His work in Phase 2 allowed him to grow this business, which now adds essential income for his family. The funds also helped him expand their family home by adding two extra rooms and build a small structure for his business. Though he’s still gathering equipment, he’s tiled and painted the interior to create a welcoming space for his customers.

SEF gave Gontse not only financial stability but also the confidence to explore other ways to earn. He began recycling cans, which brings in around R100 a week—just enough to cover the family’s electricity bills. This additional income has allowed them to buy healthier foods, like meat and cheese grills, which had previously been a stretch for the family.

One challenge came when Gontse’s sister Mary lost her job. But with the income from SEF, they could still manage their needs. Mary found her footing by opening a hairdressing business, which has also contributed to the household.

Now that Gontse’s business is self-sustaining, he’s no longer part of SEF, but he often reflects on the support and skills SEF provided. The experience taught him valuable lessons in financial independence and entrepreneurship, giving him a new mindset for the future.

Today, Gontse’s family enjoys better living conditions, healthier food, and the stability that comes with a steady income. SEF has truly helped them build a brighter future.
