GoodWorkLabs is turning ten!!
We had a terrific time celebrating the special occasion!!
I’ve been eagerly waiting for this moment since the time of the inception of GoodWorkLabs, and it’s a proud moment as a founder to see your company go above and beyond your wildest expectations to become a leader in the industry. It’s been an incredible journey over the decade and I am thankful to a lot of people who’ve encouraged me and pushed me forward.
When I look back, there are a whole slew of things that come to mind while celebrating this 10 years of technology leadership, building applications and custom software solutions, and reaching millions of people who use our products every day.
My entrepreneurial journey has always been a wild ride, with lots of ups and downs. I am grateful for the failures and shortcomings as much as I cherish the successes and milestones.
Here are the top 10 learning that I have for you after 10 years of entrepreneurship.
#1: Find a problem that you are passionate about solving. This is the base-level thinking of any entrepreneur. In most cases, you start by building an MVP and it's like selling a brick to a person who’s hair is on fire. It may not be the ideal solution, but the problem is that pressing it requires solving by any means. Eventually, with enough iterations, you end up building a pipe or a bucket of water that puts out fire in the most efficient way possible. The point is, recruiting 10 customers who have a burning problem is much better than 1000 customers who have a passing annoyance. Focus on getting that initial few who believe in you and your solution, and you will eventually be able to reach that 1000 with a better solution than the one you started with.
#2: Set systems in place. Before you launch your business, it is important to know that you can’t do everything all the time. Learn to automate and delegate to increase your efficiency.
#3: Create a narrative. A business leader should also be a great storyteller. You need to be able to articulate the problem and solution that you are proposing in order to get started and that requires storytelling. Another important characteristic that goes along with this is that the CEO or founder is always the best salesperson for the company.
#4: Hire people who are better than you. No entrepreneur can succeed alone. You need a team of talented and dedicated people who are better at specific things rather than a bunch of multitaskers who can do more things in a mediocre way.
#5: The 90/10 solution. It says that you should focus on the most important features and functionality, and that you should avoid unnecessary complexity. This will help you to get to market quickly and efficiently, and it will give you a better chance of success.
Here's how you can implement the 90/10 solution in your startup:

#6: Don’t scale your team/product until you have built something people want. You should focus on building a product that solves a real problem for people before you start hiring a lot of people or investing in a lot of infrastructure. It's important to remember that startups are high-risk ventures, and there's a good chance that your first product won't be a success. If you scale your team and product too quickly, you could end up wasting a lot of time and money on something that no one wants. It's better to start small and focus on building a product that people love. Once you have a product that people are using and paying for, then you can start to think about scaling your team and product.
#7: Your competitor is not out to get you, at least, not yet. As a new startup founder, it's natural to find yourself fixated on the competition. However, it's important to remember that obsessing over your rivals is often counterproductive. I often say that startup companies meet their demise due to self-inflicted actions rather than external factors. While competitive dynamics can certainly play a pivotal role in your company's success or failure, it's unlikely to be a pressing concern within the first year or two of operation. So, instead of spending precious time worrying about competitors, focus on building a strong foundation for your startup and laying the groundwork for future success.
#8: Do less, really well! When you're just starting out, it's important to pick one or two key metrics to measure your startup's success. Then, make sure everything you do is focused on improving those metrics. It can be tempting to add new features all the time, but it's important to focus on the most important problems your customers are facing. Talk to your customers and figure out what they need, and then build features that solve those problems. If you focus on the right metrics and build the right features, you'll be well on your way to success."
#9: Celebrate your successes. It is important to celebrate your successes along the way. This will help you stay motivated and keep moving forward.
#10: Don’t be afraid to say no to clients. When you start, you have a tendency to say yes to everything the client asks. Understand that this client is not the beginning and end. If you make that part of your company culture, you will have to negotiate much less, and your clients will also know what to expect further down the line.
Decision making is one of the most important skills an entrepreneur should have. You need to make quick decisions based on available information at a moment's notice every day, and if you can’t manage that, entrepreneurship might not be for you.
