Google I/O 2024 - Top 10 Highlights and what they mean for you!

Normally, I don't post more than once a week on Insight Edge, but this was too important to be missed! Hence this out of turn update on Google I/O 2024!

Google I/O 2024 showcased amazing new advancements in AI (Artificial Intelligence), which will change how we use technology every day. Here’s a simple summary of the key announcements (the full keynote is embedded below) and what they mean for you:

1. Gemini Models: Smarter Tools for Everyone

• Over 1.5 million developers use Google’s Gemini models to debug (fix errors) in code, gain new insights, and create advanced AI applications. These models are now part of many Google products, making them more powerful and easier to use. I particularly liked the Calendar and GMail integration. To simplify techspeak, Google now allows 1Mn tokens which means you can upload an hour long video or a 1500 Pg book to Gemini to analyse and offer insights about!
• What this means for you: This means that tools we use daily, like Google Search and Photos, will become smarter and more helpful, making our lives easier and more productive.

2. Project Astra: The Future of AI Helpers

• Summary: Project Astra is a new AI helper that processes (understands and manages) video and speech input quickly and efficiently. It can remember where you left your glasses or suggest ways to speed up your computer.
• What this means for you: This project is like having a super-intelligent assistant that understands your needs in real time, making everyday tasks smoother and more efficient.

3. Veo: Creating Videos with AI

• Summary: Veo is a new AI tool that creates high-quality 1080p videos from text, images, and other videos. You can give it prompts (instructions) like “aerial shot of a landscape” and it will create it for you.
• What this means for you: This tool makes video creation easy and accessible to everyone, even if you don’t have professional skills. Great for content creators, marketers, and educators.

4. Trillium CPU and Axion Processor: Faster and More Efficient Chips

• Summary: Google introduced the Trillium CPU and Axion Processor, which are faster and more energy-efficient. These will be available to cloud customers by 2024 and 2025.
• What this means for you:: These new chips will make our devices run faster and more efficiently, improving performance for a wide range of applications and saving energy.

5. Gemini in Google Search: Smarter Searching

• Summary: Google’s Gemini model has improved Search, allowing users to ask more complex questions and get better-organized results. You can even search using photos.
• What this means for you: This means finding information online will be easier and more intuitive, giving you better and more relevant answers quickly.

6. Gemini Live: Voice-Activated AI Conversations

• Summary: Gemini Live allows you to have real-time voice conversations with AI. You can talk to it naturally, and it will understand and respond to your needs.
• What this means for you: This feature makes interacting with AI feel more like talking to a real person, making it easier and more enjoyable to use digital assistants.

7. Gemini Gems: Your Personal AI Experts

• Summary: Gemini Gems let you create customized AI experts on any topic you want. Set it up once, and it’s ready to help you anytime. This is a bit similar to OpenAI's ChatGPTs for context, but it looks like the differentiator is the distribution advantage due to data from Google Products
• What this means for you: This is perfect for anyone who needs specialized help, from hobbyists to professionals, offering personalized and on-demand assistance.

8. Android 15: AI at the Core

• Summary: The newest version of Android integrates AI deeply into the system, offering features like AI-powered search and a new AI assistant. Gemini has already replaced Google assistant on the topline Samsung Phones and this will scale to other parts of Android ecosystem rapidly from the looks of it
• What this means for you: This makes your smartphone smarter and more responsive, helping you with everyday tasks and keeping your data private.

9. Circle to Search: A Study Buddy for Students and for Shoppers too!

• Summary: Circle to Search allows students to get help with tricky problems by circling the part they don’t understand on their devices.
• What this means for you: This tool makes studying easier by providing instant, step-by-step assistance, helping students learn more effectively. Similarly you can imagine shoppers using this creatively too! I can literally imagine many 'Circle to Searches' happening at our nearby Supermarkets!

10. Gemini Nano: Understanding the World Like We Do

• Summary: Gemini Nano, included in Android, can understand text, visuals, and spoken language, making interactions with your phone more natural and intuitive. This is a lightweight model that can make our smartphone even more useful.
• What this means for you: This feature makes your phone smarter, helping it understand and respond to your needs just like a human would.
