Although phone scams can be extremely harmful, technology is advancing to alert customers to frauds even when the con artist is still on the line attempting to defraud you of your money. Google revealed new scam-detection features for Android phones at Google I/O 2024, the company's annual developers conference, on Tuesday. These features will use Google's artificial intelligence tool Gemini to identify fraudulent activity and alert users to it in real time.

An alert alerting the user to a potential fraud appears on the phone as soon as Google's AI notices that the chat contains questionable words.

A red pop-up window with the wording, "Likely scam: Banks will never ask you to move your money to keep it safe," and buttons to end and continue the call was the example that was on show at the event. The phone user was also informed that the scam alert had appeared via an alert noise.

That might frighten some individuals because it appears to show that Google's AI is listening to your phone calls. All information will remain confidential on your smartphone, a corporate representative assured me. The new functionality, which is still undergoing testing, has no set date.
