GORGEOUS DOMAINS OF LEARNING
Learning is everywhere. We can learn mental skills, develop our attitudes and acquire new physical skills as we perform the activities of our daily living. These domains of learning can be categorized as cognitive domain (knowledge), psychomotor domain (skills) and affective domain (attitudes). This categorization is best explained by the Taxonomy of Learning Domains formulated by a group of researchers led by Benjamin Bloom in 1956.
A. Cognitive Domain
The cognitive domain involves the development of our mental skills and the acquisition of knowledge. The six categories under this domain are:
- Knowledge: the ability to recall data and/or information.
- Example: A child recites the English alphabet.
- Comprehension: the ability to understand the meaning of what is known.
- Example: A teacher explains a theory in his own words.
- Application: the ability to utilize an abstraction or to use knowledge in a new situation.
- Example: A nurse intern applies what she learned in her Psychology class when she talks to patients.
- Analysis: the ability to differentiate facts and opinions.
- Example: A lawyer was able to win over a case after recognizing logical fallacies in the reasoning of the offender.
- Synthesis: the ability to integrate different elements or concepts in order to form a sound pattern or structure so a new meaning can be established.
- Examples: A therapist combines yoga, biofeedback and support group therapy in creating a care plan for his patient.
- Evaluation: the ability to come up with judgments about the importance of concepts.
- Examples: A businessman selects the most efficient way of selling products.
B. Affective Domain
The affective domain involves our feelings, emotions and attitudes. This domain is categorized into 5 sub domains, which include:
- Receiving Phenomena: the awareness of feelings and emotions as well as the ability to utilize selected attention.
- Example: Listening attentively to a friend.
- Responding to Phenomena: active participation of the learner.
- Example: Participating in a group discussion.
- Valuing: the ability to see the worth of something and express it.
- Example: An activist shares his ideas on the increase in salary of laborers.
- Organization: ability to prioritize a value over another and create a unique value system.
- Example: A teenager spends more time in her studies than with her boyfriend.
- Characterization: the ability to internalize values and let them control the person`s behaviour.
- Example: A man marries a woman not for her looks but for what she is.
C. Psychomotor Domain
The psychomotor domain is comprised of utilizing motor skills and coordinating them. The seven categories under this include:
- Perception: the ability to apply sensory information to motor activity.
- Example: A cook adjusts the heat of stove to achieve the right temperature of the dish.
- Set: the readiness to act.
- Example: An obese person displays motivation in performing planned exercise.
- Guided Response: the ability to imitate a displayed behavior or to utilize trial and error.
- Example: A person follows the manual in operating a machine.
- Mechanism: the ability to convert learned responses into habitual actions with proficiency and confidence.
- Example: A mother was able to cook a delicious meal after practicing how to cook it.
- Complex Overt Response: the ability to skilfully perform complex patterns of actions.
- Example: Typing a report on a computer without looking at the keyboard.
- Adaptation: the ability to modify learned skills to meet special events.
- Example: A designer uses plastic bottles to create a dress.
- Origination: creating new movement patterns for a specific situation.
- Example: A choreographer creates a new dance routine.
Cognitive Learning Theory
Definition:Edward Tolman has contributed significantly to the Cognitive Learning Theory. According to him, individuals not only responds to stimuli but also act on beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, feelings and strive towards goals.
Cognitive Learning Theory is a broad theory that explains thinking and differing mental processes and how they are influenced by internal and external factors in order to produce learning in individuals. When cognitive processes are working normally then acquisition and storage of knowledge works well, but when these cognitive processes are ineffective, learning delays and difficulties can be seen.
In other words, An individual creates a cognitive map in his mind, i.e. an image of the external environment, preserves and organizes information gathered, as a result of the consequences of events encountered during the learning process. Thus, the organism learns about the event and objects on the basis of a meaning assigned to stimuli.
Tolman was the first behaviorist who challenged the conditional theory on the belief that stimulus-response theory is unacceptable, as reinforcement was not necessary for the learning to happen and asserted that behavior was mainly cognitive. He believed that the environment offers several experiences or cues which are used to develop the mental image i.e. cognitive map.
Thus, cognitive learning theory is based on the cognitive model of human behavior, i.e. it emphasizes on the free will and positive aspects of human behavior. Cognition refers to the individual’s thoughts, feelings, ideas, knowledge and understanding about himself and the environment. Thus, an organism applies this cognition in learning which results in not merely the response to a stimulus, but the application of internal image of the external environment, so as to accomplish the goal.
Tolman has conducted an experiment to elucidate the cognitive learning theory. He trained a rat to turn right in the ‘T’ maze in order to obtain food. One day, he started a rat from the opposite part of the maze, according to the operant conditioning theory, the rat should have turned right due to the past conditioning, but instead, it turned towards where the food was kept.
Thus, Tolman concluded that rat formed a cognitive map in its mind to figure out where the food has been placed, and reinforcement was not a precondition for learning to take place.
These cognitive processes are: observing, categorizing, and forming generalizations about our environment. A disruption in these natural cognitive processes can cause behavioral problems in individuals and the key to treating these problems lies in changing the disrupted process. For example, a person with an eating disorder genuinely believes that they are extremely overweight. Some of this is due to a cognitive disruption in which their perception of their own weight is skewed. A therapist will try to change their constant pattern of thinking that they are overweight in order to decrease the unhealthy behaviors that are a result of it.

When we say the word “learning”, we usually mean “to think using the brain”. This basic concept of learning is the main viewpoint in the Cognitive Learning Theory (CLT). The theory has been used to explain mental processes as they are influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, which eventually bring about learning in an individual.
Cognitive Learning Theory implies that the different processes concerning learning can be explained by analyzing the mental processes first. It posits that with effective cognitive processes, learning is easier and new information can be stored in the memory for a long time. On the other hand, ineffective cognitive processes result to learning difficulties that can be seen anytime during the lifetime of an individual.
A. Social Cognitive Theory
In the Social Cognitive Theory, we are considering 3 variables:
- behavioral factors
- environmental factors (extrinsic)
- personal factors (intrinsic)
These 3 variables in Social Cognitive Theory are said to be interrelated with each other, causing learning to occur. An individual’s personal experience can converge with the behavioral determinants and the environmental factors.
Social Cognitive Theory Illustration (Pajares, 2002) In the person-environment interaction, human beliefs, ideas and cognitive competencies are modified by external factors such as a supportive parent, stressful environment or a hot climate. In the person-behavior interaction, the cognitive processes of a person affect his behavior; likewise, performance of such behavior can modify the way he thinks. Lastly, the environment-behavior interaction, external factors can alter the way you display the behavior. Also, your behavior can affect and modify your environment. This model clearly implies that for effective and positive learning to occur an individual should have positive personal characteristics, exhibit appropriate behavior and stay in a supportive environment.
In addition, Social Cognitive Theory states that new experiences are to be evaluated by the learner by means of analyzing his past experiences with the same determinants. Learning, therefore, is a result of a thorough evaluation of the present experience versus the past.
Basic Concepts
Social Cognitive Theory includes several basic concepts that can manifest not only in adults but also in infants, children and adolescents.
- Observational Learning
- learning from other people by means of observing them is an effective way of gaining knowledge and altering behavior.
- Reproduction
- the process wherein there is an aim to effectively increase the repeating of a behavior by means of putting the individual in a comfortable environment with readily accessible materials to motivate him to retain the new knowledge and behavior learned and practice them.
- Self-efficacy
- the course wherein the learner improves his newly learned knowledge or behavior by putting it into practice.
- Emotional coping
- good coping mechanisms against stressful environment and negative personal characteristics can lead to effective learning, especially in adults.
- Self-regulatory capability
- ability to control behavior even within an unfavorable environment.
B. Cognitive Behavioral Theory
Cognitive Behavioral Theory describes the role of cognition (knowing) to determining and predicting the behavioral pattern of an individual. This theory was developed by Aaron Beck.
The Cognitive Behavioral Theory says that individuals tend to form self-concepts that affect the behavior they display. These concepts can be positive or negative and can be affected by a person’s environment.
The Cognitive Triad
Cognitive Behavioral Theory further explains human behavior and learning using the cognitive triad. This triad includes negative thoughts about:
- The self (i.e., I am rubbish)
- The world/environment (i.e., the world is irrational)
- The future (i.e., my future is doomed)

Cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
Derived from Cognition, Oxford Learning explains "Cognitive Learning" as the function based on how a person processes and reasons information. It revolves around many factors, including problem-solving skills, memory retention, thinking skills and the perception of learned material.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a psychosocial intervention that is the most widely used evidence-based practice for treating mental disorders. It was originally designed to treat depression, and is now used for a number of mental health conditions. Due to positive results in clinical settings, CBIs have gained favor in school settings. When teachers use a CBI, they can help their students control their own behavior, rather than attempting to control student behavior with external reinforcement alone
Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning Domains
Bloom's Taxonomy was created in 1956 under the leadership of educational psychologist Dr Benjamin Bloom in order to promote higher forms of thinking in education, such as analyzing and evaluating concepts, processes, procedures, and principles, rather than just remembering facts (rote learning). It is most often used when designing educational, training, and learning processes.
The Three Domains of Learning
The committee identified three domains of educational activities or learning (Bloom, et al. 1956):
- Cognitive: mental skills (knowledge)
- Affective: growth in feelings or emotional areas (attitude or self)
- Psychomotor: manual or physical skills (skills)
Since the work was produced by higher education, the words tend to be a little bigger than we normally use. Domains may be thought of as categories. Instructional designers, trainers, and educators often refer to these three categories as KSA (Knowledge [cognitive], Skills [psychomotor], and Attitudes [affective]). This taxonomy of learning behaviors may be thought of as “the goals of the learning process.” That is, after a learning episode, the learner should have acquired a new skill, knowledge, and/or attitude.
While the committee produced an elaborate compilation for the cognitive and affective domains, they omitted the psychomotor domain. Their explanation for this oversight was that they have little experience in teaching manual skills within the college level. However, there have been at least three psychomotor models created by other researchers.
Their compilation divides the three domains into subdivisions, starting from the simplest cognitive process or behavior to the most complex. The divisions outlined are not absolutes and there are other systems or hierarchies that have been devised, such as the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO). However, Bloom's taxonomy is easily understood and is probably the most widely applied one in use today.
Cognitive Domain
The cognitive domain involves knowledge and the development of intellectual skills (Bloom, 1956). This includes the recall or recognition of specific facts, procedural patterns, and concepts that serve in the development of intellectual abilities and skills. There are six major categories of cognitive an processes, starting from the simplest to the most complex (see the table below for an in-depth coverage of each category):
- Knowledge
- Comprehension
- Application
- Analysis
- Synthesis
- Evaluation
The categories can be thought of as degrees of difficulties. That is, the first ones must normally be mastered before the next one can take place.
Bloom's Revised Taxonomy
Lorin Anderson, a former student of Bloom, and David Krathwohl revisited the cognitive domain in the mid-nineties and made some changes, with perhaps the three most prominent ones being (Anderson, Krathwohl, Airasian, Cruikshank, Mayer, Pintrich, Raths, Wittrock, 2000):
- changing the names in the six categories from noun to verb forms
- rearranging them as shown in the chart below
- creating a processes and levels of knowledge matrix
This new taxonomy reflects a more active form of thinking and is perhaps more accurate. The new version of Bloom's Taxonomy, with examples and keywords is shown below, ..

Cognitive Processes and Levels of Knowledge Matrix
Bloom's Revised Taxonomy not only improved the usability of it by using action words, but added a cognitive and knowledge matrix.
While Bloom's original cognitive taxonomy did mention three levels of knowledge or products that could be processed, they were not discussed very much and remained one-dimensional:
- Factual - The basic elements students must know to be acquainted with a discipline or solve problems.
- Conceptual – The interrelationships among the basic elements within a larger structure that enable them to function together.
- Procedural - How to do something, methods of inquiry, and criteria for using skills, algorithms, techniques, and methods.
In Krathwohl and Anderson's revised version, the authors combine the cognitive processes with the above three levels of knowledge to form a matrix. In addition, they added another level of knowledge - metacognition:
- Metacognitive – Knowledge of cognition in general, as well as awareness and knowledge of one’s own cognition.

The Cognitive Dimension
- The Knowledge Dimension Remember Under-stand Apply Analyze Evaluate Create Factual ,Conceptual, Procedural, Metacognitive. However, others have identified five contents or artifacts (Clark, Chopeta, 2004; Clark, Mayer, 2007):ic and unique data or instance.
- Concepts - A class of items, words, or ideas that are known by a common name, includes multiple specific examples, shares common features. There are two types of concepts: concrete and abstract.
- Processes - A flow of events or activities that describe how things work rather than how to do things. There are normally two types: business processes that describe work flows and technical processes that describe how things work in equipment or nature. They may be thought of as the big picture, of how something works.
- Procedures - A series of step-by-step actions and decisions that result in the achievement of a task. There are two types of actions: linear and branched.
- Principles - Guidelines, rules, and parameters that govern. It includes not only what should be done, but also what should not be done. Principles allow one to make predictions and draw implications. Given an effect, one can infer the cause of a phenomena. Principles are the basic building blocks of causal models or theoretical models (theories).
