Got Integrity?

What Integrity Means and Why It Matters

We all know the pain and suffering when the jerk at work, home, or in between does something mean, dishonest, hurtful, rude, etc. It sucks.

For example, what the heck is happening with all the ghosting? Ghosting is simply one example of a person who lacks integrity, and instead of getting too mad or sad about people like this, pray for them, knowing if they knew any better, they would probably do better.

When we ignore the universal law of Karma or the Golden Rule, it sucks for all of us. By the way, Karma means "as in so doing." What it means for humanity is that when we ignore doing the right thing, there's a cosmic cost primarily to the person ignorant of the law.

The Root of Integrity

Integrity is a word that often pops up in conversations about character and ethics. But where does this term come from, and what does it mean? More importantly, how does integrity influence our lives, especially from a virtuous perspective?

Let’s dive into the roots of the word and explore its significance.

Origin of the Word

The term “integrity” stems from the Latin word “integritas,” which translates to wholeness, soundness, or completeness. It’s related to the Latin “integer,” meaning whole or complete. This origin hints at the essence of integrity: being whole, unbroken, and undivided.

Integrity as a Virtue

From a virtuous perspective, integrity is about more than just honesty. It’s a comprehensive ethical principle that encompasses various aspects:

1. Honesty: Telling the truth and being straightforward.

2. Consistency: Acting consistently with one’s values and beliefs, regardless of the situation.

3. Reliability: Being dependable and trustworthy.

4. Ethical Courage: Standing up for what is right, even when difficult.

Consequences of Lacking Integrity

When making decisions in the business of life, ask yourself, “If I were a parent, teacher, or CEO, what would I tell my children, students, or employees to do?” Basing decisions on integrity is learning to do the right thing.

In contrast, not doing the right thing and not being in integrity can have several negative consequences:

  1. Loss of Trust: When people act inconsistently or dishonestly, others lose trust.

2. Internal Conflict: Not living according to one’s values can lead to guilt, anxiety, and internal turmoil.

3. Social Consequences: A lack of integrity can damage relationships, reputations, and professional opportunities.

4. Ethical Decay: When integrity is compromised, it can lead to a slippery slope of unethical decisions.

Regarding integrity, please remember you should do what is right or best for everyone involved. From a family or organizational perspective, making decisions with integrity empowers alignment. Alignment is essential for keeping people with a shared interest or goal working together more than apart.

In conclusion, integrity, derived from the Latin word for wholeness, is a crucial virtue that encompasses honesty, consistency, reliability, and ethical courage.

Its absence can lead to loss of trust, internal conflict, social consequences, and ethical decay. Embracing integrity means living an honest and consistent life with our deepest values and beliefs.

When making any decision, choose wisely because Karma works both ways.
