Governing Our Emotions

Governing Our Emotions

As leaders, we face daily decisions, challenges, and opportunities that pull on our emotions. Some days, it feels like our emotions take the lead, pushing us into reactions before we’ve even had time to reflect. This week, we’ll explore how to rightly discern environmental stressors, create space for intentional responses, and govern our emotions in a way that honors God and promotes peace.

What Are Feelings?

Feelings are the body's natural response to internal and external stimuli. They are indicators that something within or around us needs attention. While feelings are real, they are not always accurate reflections of truth. Circumstances, past experiences, and even environmental stressors can cloud our judgment and trigger emotions that may not align with the reality of the moment. Proverbs 14:12 reminds us, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death." Our emotions may seem right in the moment, but without discernment, they can lead us away from God’s best.

How Life’s Circumstances Affect Our Emotions

The pressures of leadership, relationships, and even our environments can have a profound effect on our emotional health. Stressful circumstances often magnify emotions like fear, frustration, or anger. James 1:19-20 urges us, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." When we allow circumstances to dictate our emotions, we lose control of our responses and may act in ways that contradict our values or purpose.

Creating Space to Respond, Not React

A critical part of emotional governance is learning to create space between what triggers us and how we respond. Instead of reacting immediately, take a moment to breathe, pray, and seek God’s wisdom. Ecclesiastes 7:9 says, "Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools." In that space, we invite the Holy Spirit to guide us, giving us clarity to choose responses that reflect grace and truth rather than reactions driven by heightened emotions.

Knowing When to Step Away

Sometimes the best way to govern your emotions is to change your environment. Take a walk, step away from the stressful situation, or simply take a break. Jesus Himself modeled this for us. In Mark 6:31, He tells His disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Jesus knew the value of stepping away to refuel and regain clarity. We must do the same, recognizing when it’s time to release emotions before they become pressurized.

Feelings Are Real, But They Don’t Govern Us

Feelings are an important part of being human, but they don’t have to govern our lives. Romans 12:2 instructs us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Our emotions may rise and fall with life’s circumstances, but through the renewal of our minds in Christ, we can govern our emotions and live purposefully.

Reflection Questions:

1. What are some common triggers in your life that stir strong emotional reactions? How can you create space between the trigger and your response?

2. When was the last time you took a break or stepped away to process your emotions before reacting? How did it help?

3. In what areas of your leadership do you feel emotions tend to govern your actions more than wisdom or discernment?

4. How can you rely more on God’s guidance when emotions are high rather than your own understanding?

Let's Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of emotions and for the wisdom to govern them wisely. Help me to discern what triggers my emotions and give me the grace to respond, not react. Teach me to create space in my life to hear Your voice before I speak or act. Guide my heart to be slow to anger and quick to listen. Help me to take the necessary steps to refresh my mind and spirit when emotions become overwhelming. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As we continue to lead with purpose, let us remember that emotions, while real, are not rulers. Through God’s wisdom and the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can govern our feelings and respond with clarity and grace.
