President Trump signed a bill Monday evening that ended a three-day government shutdown. The bill funds the government until February 8 and renews CHIP for six years. It doesn’t address issues such as DACA — a key sticking point during negotiations — but Democrats have received assurances that the Senate will tackle immigration within three weeks. Hundreds of thousands of workers who spent Monday on furlough are expected to resume normal activity this morning, now that all federal agencies are back open. • Share your thoughts: #GovtShutdown
Netflix is now a $100 billion company. The streaming service hit the market-cap milestone after a strong end of the year, adding 8.3 million new subscribers in the fourth quarter. Last year was one of Netflix’s best yet for subscriber growth, and now more than half of all US broadband households have accounts. Netflix isn’t just a threat to traditional TV and pay-TV; “the numbers also show how much bigger Netflix's subscriber base continues to grow compared to Amazon and Hulu,” notes Axios. Netflix plans to spend a whopping $8 billion on content next year to help fight off rivals. • Share your thoughts: #NetflixEarnings

Chinese medics are experimenting with gene editing to treat diseases like cancer, The Wall Street Journal reports. The Crispr tool, devised by US scientists, is not allowed to be used in human trials in America — but “in a quirk of the globalized technology arena,” faces few restrictions in China. 86 people have had their genes edited, according to the Journal, but none of the Chinese trials have published results. The first US-based Crispr trial is expected to get approval soon; the University of Pennsylvania has been working to meet requirements for nearly two years. • Share your thoughts: #GeneEditingChina
Xerox is under pressure to explore a sale. Two of its major investors (Carl Icahn and Darwin Deason, who own a combined 15% of the company) are pushing Xerox to remove CEO Jeff Jacobson and explore options including a sale. The news comes as Xerox discusses potential deals with camera company Fujifilm — a joint venture Icahn and Deason do not think Jacobson is capable of leading, according to a letter they sent to Xerox’s board of directors. Per The Wall Street Journal, an arrangement between Xerox and Fujifilm could include a change of control at Xerox, although not an outright sale. • Share your thoughts: #XeroxInvestorShakeup
Idea of the Day: “Like so many entrepreneurs, I have treated my body as if I’m invincible for the entirety of my startup life,” says Leila Janah, founder and CEO of Samasource and LXMI. But the stress recently pushed her to the brink — and she doesn’t want others to find themselves in the same situation.
“The moral of my story: don’t be a fool. Good health is your most important life and work goal. Everything else depends on it. And when you lose it, as I did, … you realize how very precious your one body is, and how much care it deserves.”
