Green energy initiatives in Africa offer substantial opportunities for investment

With its diverse landscapes and growing energy needs, Africa stands at the forefront of a transformative shift towards sustainable and green energy solutions. The continent, home to a myriad of renewable resources, is increasingly becoming a hotspot for investors seeking to contribute to both environmental conservation and economic development. In this blog, we will explore the significant investment opportunities presented by the green energy sector in Africa. Meeting Africa's increasing energy demands is feasible while concurrently shifting towards sustainable energy production across the continent.

Africa, experiencing the world's fastest population growth, is projected to double its population to over two billion by 2050. Effectively meeting the energy needs of this expanding population with cost-effective and sustainable solutions is crucial for the continent's socioeconomic development.

Solar and Wind Capacity Outlook in Africa

Electrification is essential to fulfill Africa's energy requirements :

Electrification is crucial for addressing Africa's escalating energy demands. McKinsey outlines five potential global energy transition scenarios, with this article focusing on the Achieved Commitments scenario. This scenario aligns capital expenditure with meeting the continent's energy needs and achieving global greenhouse gas reduction targets. It relies on two key assumptions: continued rapid technological advancement and enforcing policy measures supporting the transition.

As Africa's population is expected to double by 2050, with growing industrialization, the need for energy is paramount. Currently, 600 million Africans lack electricity access, a number expected to rise to 1.2 billion by 2050. The demand for clean cooking is also set to increase, affecting around 1.8 billion people in 30 years. The continent's industrialization, with a projected manufacturing output growth of over 6 percent annually until at least 2025, further emphasizes the urgency of addressing energy needs.

Electrification required for Africa's energy requirements

Transforming Africa's Energy Production Mix

To achieve widespread electrification and decrease the carbon intensity of the energy supply in Africa, a shift in the energy production mix is imperative.

Renewable energy will play an increasingly vital role in electricity generation, progressively rising to 65 percent of installed capacity by 2035 and approximately 95 per cent by 2050. Notably, solar and wind energy will experience substantial growth, constituting around 70 percent and 20 per cent of installed capacity, respectively, with hydro contributing the remaining 10 percent by 2050.

Gas Supporting Renewable Growth in Africa

Gas is anticipated to play a vital role in the short to medium term, providing flexible capacity as renewables expand and battery storage becomes more cost-effective. African gas demand is expected to increase by 3 percent annually until 2030, followed by a gradual decrease. This trend aligns with global projections, and investments in African gas infrastructure can contribute to meeting the rising global demand. North African countries could export gas to Europe, and LNG projects like the Likong’o-Mchinga LNG project in Tanzania and Nigeria LNG Train 7 project are positioned for exports.

Green Hydrogen Opportunities in Africa

Green hydrogen, produced through renewable electricity, is poised to play a crucial role in the global transition to net zero. African nations, rich in wind and solar resources, have a competitive advantage in supplying green hydrogen locally and globally. Under the Achieved Commitments scenario, global hydrogen demand could surge sevenfold by 2050, creating an opportunity for Africa to export green hydrogen. The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance, established in 2022, aims to enhance collaboration among hydrogen-producing countries, presenting significant opportunities. By 2050, Africa could meet its domestic demand potential and export around 40 megatons of green hydrogen.

McKinsey suggests that with this energy evolution, Africa's carbon intensity could decrease substantially, with energy emission intensity potentially falling by 45 percent by 2050. This reduction is driven by the increasing presence of solar, wind, and green hydrogen power sources.

Investing in Africa's Energy Transition

To drive significant changes, an estimated $2.9 trillion in cumulative capital expenditure is required from 2022 to 2050, focusing on green energy sources. In 2022, annual energy investments were $70 billion, mostly in oil, gas, and renewables. By 2050, projected annual investments exceed $160 billion, with 43 percent for hydrogen, 38 percent for renewables, and 17 percent for power transmission, distribution, and mini grids.

While the upswing in renewables and green hydrogen is anticipated after 2030, early participation by financial institutions offers strategic advantages for long-term engagement and competency development. Some investors have already initiated projects, contributing to significant green-energy advancements in Africa.

Investment opportunities also span midstream infrastructure for electricity, requiring around $400 billion in cumulative investment by 2050. Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and Senegal present notable opportunities, with plans to expand transmission and distribution networks by 120,000 kilometers by 2030, including key ongoing project
