Grit

Grit

There is a part of your health and fitness journey that few people talk about, but it is a crucial part of your success.

It's the power of grit.

Angela Duckworth wrote an awesome book called Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. The book emphasizes that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.”

Here’s why grit is crucial for your health and fitness success, along with tips drawn from Duckworth’s research:

Set a Long-Term Goal

Grit is fueled by a powerful, enduring passion for a particular long-term goal. For your fitness journey, define what success looks like to you.

Is it about feeling stronger, achieving a specific weight, or running a marathon?

Lock in that vision and remind yourself regularly why it matters to you.

Endurance Over Intensity

While intensity might get you started, it's the steady, enduring commitment that leads to results. Fitness isn't a sprint; it's a marathon.

On days you feel low or when progress seems slow, remember that persistence is key. Consistency in workouts and diet, even on tough days, will bring you closer to your goals.

Learn from Setbacks

Duckworth highlights that grittier individuals see setbacks as learning opportunities. When you face a hurdle in your fitness routine, whether it’s a missed workout or a diet slip, instead of beating yourself up, analyze what went wrong and how you can prevent it in the future.

This resilience turns potential failures into stepping stones.

Practice Deliberately

To develop fitness skills, whether it's perfecting your squat form or improving your food choices, Duckworth suggests engaging in deliberate practice.

This involves focused, structured practice with the specific aim of improving performance. For instance, work with a coach to refine your technique or plan your meals to ensure balanced nutrition.

Grit Grows in Community

Surround yourself with others who are just as committed to their fitness goals. Duckworth’s research found that grit grows in a culture where passion and perseverance toward long-term goals are not just respected but expected.

A community of like-minded people can offer support, motivation, and accountability, all of which fuel your grit.

Incorporating these strategies will not only help you cultivate grit but also empower you to stay committed to your health and fitness goals over the long term.

The journey to fitness is not about quick fixes but about building and sustaining a lifestyle.

Let’s keep moving forward, one step at a time,

-Joe
