On the ground: November

As the demand for renewable energy solutions grows, more developments are turning to ground source heat pumps (GSHP) to reduce their carbon footprints and energy bills.

In this edition of Onsen On the Ground, we speak with Gareth Berry, Managing Director of Onsen Energy and board member of the Ground Source Heat Pump Association, to learn more about Onsen’s journey and partnership with Kensa.  Plus, we highlight our recent installation project together for their brand new compact heat pump, the ShoeboxNX.

We hope you enjoy this edition of On the Ground - and invite you to share with your network.

The Power of Ground Source Heat Pumps: Insights from Gareth Berry, MD of Onsen Energy

Onsen Energy has been at the forefront of renewable energy installations for over a decade - with our expertise growing alongside a mission to provide sustainable solutions for homes and businesses.

However, Onsen Energy didn’t always specialise in ground source heat pumps.

Our journey into this renewable technology started after noticing a shift in the market. Gareth explains…

“We first got into ground source heating a few years back while working in the construction industry, installing traditional heating systems. We saw an increasing demand for ground source heating and decided to jump into the industry with both feet! We bought a drilling rig, founded Onsen Energy, and approached Kensa for guidance. Kensa provided invaluable training and support, helping us navigate MCS compliance. Their partnership has been instrumental in getting us where we are today as a Kensa partner installer.”

For more detail on the Onsen journey and his insights into the ground source heat pump sector’s future, you can read the full interview with Gareth in this month’s blog.

Onsen Energy in a UK first: Kensa’s Shoebox NX

We’re thrilled to have completed the first UK installation of the Shoebox NX with our partners at Kensa. This ground source heat pump is perfect for smaller, energy-efficient homes.

For this project, we installed the Shoebox NX in a brand-new self-built bungalow equipped with underfloor heating, solar panels, and electric battery storage.

The Shoebox NX is the heart of the home, offering exceptional energy efficiency (delivering 5.35 SCOP) and super-quiet operation in a compact design, perfect for properties with limited space.

Gareth had these comments to make about Kensa’s new heat pump tech.

“There are several standout features that we’ve noticed. For example, the top connections make it much easier and faster to connect the heat pump, speeding up the installation process. It also features a screen, similar to Kensa’s Evo range, making the interface more user-friendly. One of the biggest highlights is how quiet the Shoebox NX is in operation. That’s a major bonus for the homeowner.”

Our client is now enjoying near off-grid living with significantly reduced heating and hot water costs.

Mud Processing in Action

In case you missed it, we’ve got a fun slo-mo video of our brand new state-of-the-art mud processing unit in action. It really showcases the primary purpose of circulating drilling mud - to lift cuttings from the borehole to enable unobstructed borehole loop installation.

A unit like this is essential for enabling a cleaner drilling site, improving efficiency and recycling of fluids.

We pride ourselves on leaving a mess-free and undamaged site - and this piece of kit helps us to maintain these standards.
