Growth Mindset & The Power Of "Yet"

Something Silly:

Science* says only 8% of people actually achieve their goals.

Something Serious:

An easy way to shift to a growth mindset, is by the use of a little word, yet. This word means a realisation that some things are worth waiting for, and those things take work and it's merely a starting point to adopt a strong work eithic and stronger dedication to achieving your goals.

It's not always easy, but the power of this small word allows for success.

Loving the clarity of your writing Joshua. I have many a conversation where people think words don't matter and don't change anything. I know it can sound fanciful and I absolutely believe we can rewire, retrain and rethink how we are. "...yet" is sooo powerful; it keeps the doorway of possibility open. Even if it's just a crack, the possibility that it could be, is real. "I can't run a Boston-qualifying marathon time, yet" !!!. I started running aged 44 and it was all about a marathon. Ten marathons later and my finish times have gone from 4 hr 52 min down to 3 hr 29 min. Just 4 mins shy of a good-for-age qualifier. Will I get there? We shall see - there's lots of life that happens. And the *possibility* is *real*. Another pattern I cannot help but notice when working with clients is the use of "but" to join 2 ideas or observations. "The meeting was really good, but, we didn't get to where we needed to be. "But" simply negates the leading statement. 9 times out of 10 is logically not the correct word to use. It's constrictive. Reductive. It shuts down thinking. So I have clients experiment with substituting in "AND" in place of the "BUT", and notice the impact it has on them, and others around them.

Excellent read, Joshua Miller. Thank you for that tip on using 'yet'. It's a very powerful flip once one gets used to using it.
