Habit Over Hype: Building Foundations for Long-Term Success

Why Daily Discipline Outweighs Temporary Enthusiasm

By: Lorette Farris

The common pitfall of neglecting long-term planning is often exemplified by the all-too-familiar hype-led dreams, the: "I'll get around to that later" shelf we all seem to have. When a project, prospect, or opportunity is new, it's thrilling, and we throw ourselves wholeheartedly into the ideation stage. But then, the initial enthusiasm wanes, and without preparation, it becomes challenging to live up to those lofty early goals. However, with just a bit of tweaking and proactive planning, you'll notice a significant shift in maintaining momentum and achieving those aims.

A simple tweak to your daily routine can carve out time and space for new habits.

One of the challenges along the journey is that motivation often creeps in, disguised as a new direction. Still, once the initial enthusiasm fades, the project is tabled. How can you change that? By altering the habit that prevents you from moving forward.

What if I told you that you could make a slight tweak in your daily routine that would give you the time and space to develop a new habit - something that can be easily introduced, is minimally invasive, yet delivers significant results?

To kick off the launch of our Business Lifecycle Journey Programs, we have a series of articles planned that will touch on each part of the business lifecycle. We hope you enjoy, comment, like, follow, and share with your colleagues. In this inaugural edition, we want to share three tips for building habits that support long-term planning.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Business Lifecycle Journey Newsletter. As we navigate the myriad twists and turns of the business journey, it's crucial to occasionally slow down and engage in deliberate planning rather than merely reacting on instinct. Crafting a growth strategy for your business is akin to using GPS on a road trip to an unfamiliar destination. Without it, we often find ourselves lost, even though the tools for guidance are within reach. Yet, for many, the very thought of integrating new tasks into our daily grind seems daunting.

Building new habit muscles doesn't have to be a strain, though it does require commitment, dedication, and consistency. It's easy to be swayed by the initial excitement of a new direction, but maintaining momentum after the novelty wears off is where the real challenge lies. How do we overcome this? By changing the habits that stall our progress. I'm not saying it's easy, but I'm attesting that it's definitely doable.

For instance, if you've always wanted to write a book but can't seem to find the time, challenge yourself to write just one paragraph each day (at a consistent time). Keep it simple - at your desk, beside your bed, or before your morning routine, and let your thoughts flow without worrying about cohesion unless it comes naturally. Commit to this for 14 days. Soon, you'll likely find that the voice of self-doubt is quieter, and you're actually looking forward to this new part of your morning ritual; now, you can expand to one page a day as you ramp up over the next few weeks. I hope this doesn't sound too wonky; I emphasize it because it's a game-changer.

Returning to the broader scope of the Business Lifecycle Journey, as business builders, we often prioritize action over planning. Yet, the most successful entrepreneurs vouch for the benefits of strategic, long-term planning—or what I like to call "building to your exit." To help ease you into developing a mindset for strategic planning, I'd like to share a few tips on cultivating new habits specifically aimed at enhancing your long-term planning mindset.

Imagine making a simple tweak to your daily routine that carves out time and space for new habits—changes that are easy to implement, minimally invasive, yet significantly impactful.

To celebrate the launch of our Business Lifecycle Journey Programs, we have planned a series of articles that explore each stage of the business lifecycle. I hope you enjoy, comment, and share these insights with your peers. In this first edition, we're excited to offer three tips on building habits that bolster long-term planning.

Thank you for joining us on this mission-driven journey, which aims to share knowledge and spark meaningful conversations. Let's embark on this path together, equipped with the tools and habits necessary for sustained success.
