Halfway point: Australia on track to make Olympic history
Australia’s Olympians are delivering one of the best performances in history, with 27 medals as the tournament moves into its second week.
Despite some lacklustre results, particularly in rowing and boxing, Australia has picked up at least one gold medal on each day of the first week. The 12 golds, from a total of 27 medals, is the best start Australia has ever made at the Games. For the latest medal tally click here.
Men’s tennis doubles champions Matthew Ebden and John Peers described the Australian Olympic team as particularly tight-knit, spending every night watching and cheering on one another inside the athletes’ village.
“I just get so much adrenaline and belief from all our athletes,” Ebden said after the match on Saturday. “We have our own belief in everything we do, but being with all the other athletes, our swimmers, rugby players, water polo … I’ve just been thriving and leaning off that.
“It’s definitely influenced me … to really want to win and give me that confidence to win.”
