HamiltonJet Sponsors of Women in Engineering programme at University of Canterbury
HamiltonJet were proud to sponsor this year’s WiE CAN (Women in Engineering at Canterbury) programme. WiE CAN is run by Canterbury University and is for girls entering their final year of high school, who are interested in pursuing an engineering career.
Over five days, the University hosted 60 girls from around New Zealand, providing a series of workshops covering all disciplines of engineering and featuring industry speakers. The girls also had a chance to have a good around the city.
Representing HamiltonJet were Steph and Manpreet, who attended for a day each to support mechanical and electrical workshops. They both agreed it was wonderful to be a part of a programme encouraging young women to join the engineering field.
The WiE CAN programme is also very helpful for those who don’t know which field of engineering is best for them as it affords them the opportunity to learn about the different disciplines.
Supporting and encouraging women into an engineering degree is a key part of increasing female representation in the engineering industry, and this programme is delivering results. Now into its fourth year, female enrolment in the University's BE(Hons) has grown 3% since WiECAN’s inception. Last year 56% of attendees enrolled at UC and 53% enrol in a BE(Hons).
