Handling a 'NO'

Based on my professional experience as a Sales Professional, the word that we often deal with is the crisp two-lettered word 'NO'.

No, we've thought of another product!

No, we think your services are too priced too high!

No, we don't have the budget!

No, we'll think about you next time!

No, there's no requirement right now!

Have you experienced the above ☝️ statements in your career?

Undoubtedly, rejection can shatter an individual, but as sales professionals, we must swiftly recover and move on. Therefore, the question is, "How do you deal when told NO?"

Sharing a few of my NO handling approaches below (kindly share yours so others could potentially learn.)

  • I always make sure to thank my prospects for the opportunity they gave us. Since saying "no" doesn't always come easy, this is also helpful to them.
  • It's hard, but I try not to make an expression when I hear the word "NO." I don't want my prospects to notice how I feel.
  • I'm cordial when I leave the meeting room, and I always remember to smile as I depart.
  • Once outside, I reflect on what happened and note where I may have erred in reading or dealing with the prospect.

Finally, I would like to reassure you that regardless of the number of times someone tells you NO, you shouldn't ever allow it to pull you down. Each day is a new opportunity for a professional salesperson; therefore, pick yourself up and go forward confidently; the next sale is nearly here. 👍🏾

I appreciate your feedback and comments.

You must always be able to predict what's next and then have the flexibility to evolve.

Well written Anand! Even if someone says ‘No’, you may still have some opportunities with them in future.
