Happy Birthday, Humans of AI!
If you are not in for deep human, sappy emotions….keep scrolling.
Folks, you have blown me away, and it’s time to say thank you with big fat tears streaming down my face. If there is anything that reminds us of what it means to be human, it’s tears. One year ago, I started this newsletter. It took me a New York minute to decide on the name. I never imagined it would become what it has.
Indulge me in some math:
For those of you who have been with me from the beginning, you have given me more than three hours of your life reading this newsletter. Of all the things you could be doing with your precious time, that’s an investment, and I plan to keep delivering a return!
For those of you who are new to this community, it all happens in the comments. I write to spark a dialogue and my favorite part of writing is hearing from you, no matter what your perspective. 2,708 engagements…..that’s a Hot Ass LinkedIn party!
(I named my publishing arm HOT ASS PRESS, cause these are the kinds of things you can do after 50).
The Next 15 Chapters
This week I am so thrilled to announce that my book is being printed as we speak. It’s currently available in pre-sales on my website and will be available on Amazon on March 7. TEMPERATURE: Creativity in the Age of AI is all about what it means to create as humans—with or without a machine.
It’s dedicated to you.
Thank you for giving me the space and the support to create.
Writing with AI
I don’t need to tell you how much I love AI. It fascinates me, challenges me, helps me, confuses me, and sometimes outright frustrates me. I know it’s just math, but isn’t that the way of all relationships?
Did I use AI to help me write? Hell, yes! For those of you who’ve written long form content, you know that one of the hardest parts about writing is remembering what you’ve already written. At first Claude, with a longer context length, and now a custom GPT in ChatGPT helped me put each chapter in context, be able to call back to earlier content so I could create consistency and fluidity in storytelling.
It also helped me turn my framework into a 100 page workbook that is included in the book, giving personalized guidance for 25 different personas I’ve identified in the creative process.
I used it to give me feedback on the readability of my chapters in conjunction with a series of human editors. I could ask it to read it from the perspective of different readers to make sure I was speaking directly to my intended audience.

I tried doing some research and writing with both Claude and ChatGPT and learned the hard way about how convincing hallucinations can be. In one chapter, I wanted to write about the specificity of muscle fibers in athletes and I was looking for athletes who adapted from sprinting to marathon and vice versa. I found a compelling story about Michael Johnson, a sprinter, attempting the Austin marathon. It was the perfect story, until I did some fact checking to find out that never happened. It felt so real, and yet it wasn’t.
I also used it at the end to format my endnotes in Chicago style. This was a godsend and gave me a chance to review every source in detail so you can find and read them yourself (my favorite books and articles come from the endnotes).
And I promise you there is no delving into the landscape to unleash your creativity in this book! Every word on the page, whether it came from my brain or AI, was a choice. As I say in the endnotes, I own both the rights and the responsibilities of my choices.
As for selecting images, there are 15 in the book and they were chosen from over 10,000 images I’ve generated based upon how well they illustrated the chapter concepts as well as how they would print in black and white.
And the cover….well, let’s save that for another story. It’s a good one and deserves its own newsletter.
So, this is my ask.
Read it.
Please.
Pretty please,
with sugar on top.
The worst imaginable fate is that I wrote 300 pages (approximately 99,000 tokens) for me, my dogs, and my mother.
