Happy New Year -2021: Today The AfCFTA Dream Comes True

The founding fathers of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now called the African Union (AU) had a dream and vision of a united and prosperous African continent which benefited all her people.

The African Union has described the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement as historic.

At the launch of the initiative in Kigali, Rwanda,  Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission said it is ‘a dream come true’.

“A dream, an old dream is coming true, since the inaugural summit of the Organisation of African Unity in May 1963, the African Continental Free Trade Area that we are launching today is one of the most emblematic projects on the African Agenda, the founding fathers will certainly be proud of it”,

Today, those dreams are becoming a reality with the advent of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which creates a single continental market for goods and services in Africa. It is a response to the aspirations of Agenda 2063, which is underpinned by the AU’s vision to build an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa that is a dynamic force in the international arena.

AfCFTA is one of the flagship projects of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and it will help the continent to address challenges of youth unemployment, skills development, industrialisation, women empowerment and infrastructure development. It will create a single super market for goods and services, which will strengthen trade and inter-African investment.

“May 2021 reshape our thoughts for a future, hold us in prosperity for new opportunities and keep us all safe and strong! Today, we not only celebrate the start of a new year, but today we give Africa a new beginning, with the start of trading as a free trade area, under the AfCFTA.” Wamkele Mene, SG: AfCFTA Secretariat.

“The African Continental Free Trade Area will fundamentally change the economic fortunes of our continent. I call on the entrepreneurs of our nation to seize the abundant opportunities that this historic development will present to explore new markets and build new partnerships.” Cyril Ramaphosa, Chair African Union.

The dream can only become a reality when all Africans unite and stand as ONE.

UNITY! UNITY! UNITY! UNITY!

Creating One African Market.

And why did Africa mimic Europe and create an organization with the name “Union” in it rather than keeping the moniker Organization of African Unity?

Excellent development. Hope everything goes on well regarding the free trade in the Continent. It is my greatest desire that where there are Hurdles to be jumped leaders within the Continent will engage, consult collaborate and cooperate for success. Now that Nigeria's initial unwillingness to join has been resolved, other drawbacks can also be resolved. I think nothing is impossible if we work hard at it. Long live AFRICA. United we stand divided we fall. Congrats Africa Leaders.

And it came to pass... This is a historical milestone that future generations would catch a glimpse of in the rear view mirror and commend us for our joint decision making and heavy lifting.
