Harness the Power of AI in Your Job Search II. (Plus 10 Best ChatGPT Prompts)

ChatGPT is arguably one of the best and most popular AI tools nowadays. Obviously, this begs the question, can ChatGPT help in the job search, and how.

Some time ago, I wrote an article on AI in job search. Since then, these tools underwent rapid development so I decided there is time to write an update. Most of what I wrote earlier is still true, however the Large Language Models (LLM), especially ChatGPT, made a big progress since then, so I want to focus on ChatGPT in this article and show you how it can nowadays help you in your job search.

You can also find various specialized AI tools online. However, most of them use ChatGPT as the engine in the background and simply save you the effort of generating the right prompts. But why pay for such tools when you can use ChatGPT by just copy-pasting my awesome prompts—and all of that for free!

Resume Writing and Polishing

Since ChatGPT is a language model, working with text is one of its strengths. It can help correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and make your resume look more professional. If you want ChatGPT to create your resume from scratch, make sure to provide all the essential information, and thoroughly review the output. These AI tools sometimes fabricate skills or achievements to make your resume appear better, which could however backfire. Resume Tailoring

While I don't recommend relying on any AI tool to tailor your resume, as it may incorporate inaccurate information (see above), ChatGPT can help you analyze the job description and identify key focus areas and keywords to include. This approach can increase your chances of passing through the prescreening process and getting an interview.

Cover Letter Writing

ChatGPT can be a great help in crafting your cover letter by turning the information you provide into a professional, well-structured letter. It can suggest phrasing, improve the flow of your writing, and ensure your cover letter highlights your key qualifications and enthusiasm for the role. Additionally, ChatGPT can help tailor your letter to the specific job and company.

Company Research

Now that ChatGPT's database is no longer limited to the year 2021, you can use it to expedite your research on the company as you prepare for your interview. However, be aware that it may not perform as well for small, private companies with limited public information available about them.

Interview Questions

The set of questions you may be asked in a job interview is fairly standard, and you can find them in my book, Get Your Dream Job’, along with detailed instructions on how to answer them. However, ChatGPT can help you generate more specific examples tailored to the job and the company, thus enhancing your preparation. The same applies to the questions you should ask the interviewer (see more on this topic in my earlier article, What to Ask in a Job Interview to Land the Job’).

Following Up

As a language model, ChatGPT can help you draft the communication you may need when following up during your job search, especially if you are not a native speaker of the language your potential employer uses or if you simply want to ensure there are no grammar mistakes. However, be careful not to overdo the follow-ups, as it may lead to unwanted consequences. Dos and Don'ts of Using AI in Your Job Search

Here are some essential guidelines to follow when using ChatGPT or similar tools:

DOs:

  • Seek Ideas: ChatGPT can provide inspiration for your resume or interview questions, acting like a knowledgeable friend you can consult for advice.
  • Enhance Your Writing: If you’re unsure how to phrase something, ChatGPT can help refine your language to sound more professional.
  • Verify Your Facts: Before submitting your resume or attending an interview, use ChatGPT to double-check that all facts and dates are accurate.

DON’Ts:

  • Avoid Over-Reliance: ChatGPT is a tool to assist you, not a substitute for your input. Simply copying and pasting its output can result in a document that doesn’t reflect your voice.
  • Don’t Delegate Your Story: Your job history is unique to you. ChatGPT can only generate generic text, so ensure your resume and cover letter convey your personal narrative.
  • Limit Your Usage: While ChatGPT is a valuable resource, don’t overlook other job search methods, such as career newsletters, books, or consulting with an expert career coach.

Conclusion

While ChatGPT is a cool tool, it’s important to remember that it’s still just a computer program. Always double-check the tips and information it provides, and be honest in what you include on your resume and say in job interviews. Additionally, ensure you adjust ChatGPT’s output to reflect your personality and unique story, making your application look authentic and genuine.
