I remember reading a book early on as an entrepreneur called "The Magic of Thinking Big" by David Schwartz. The idea of thinking big enthralled me, I couldn't wait to implement the ideas.

Suddenly, I didn't want to just be an entrepreneur; I wanted to be a billionaire entrepreneur! I didn't want to help a few people; I wanted to help billions of people! I didn't want to just have one glass of wine; I wanted to...OK, yes, I thankfully did just have the one. Whew. That was a good idea.

The magic is real.

It's exciting to set goals and visualize them coming to life...except when they don't come to fruition. If this happens over and over, it's common to stop setting goals altogether.

The problem isn't you or your goals being too big; it's that you don't have an effective goal setting and achievement methodology.

There is magic in thinking big, but there is even more magic in executing the right actions along the way to make those goals a reality.

You may also be trying to wear too many hats.

So let's dig a little deeper, help you take off a few of those hats, and get to thinking bigger and executing effectively.

Are you one of the many who've gone cold turkey on goal setting – you're burned out from the disappointment of not realizing them? The likely problem was you were missing the most yielding system and the correct 'who' to solve the 'how.'

Ask yourself, "whose problem do I want to solve," and most importantly, "who has the skills I don't that can help me along the way."

Once you clarify the "who," you can get to work on the "how" of goal setting and achievement. These elements are not only critical to your success, they are a science that successful corporations spend a ton of time on perfecting.

The Goal-Setting Framework Used By Google

Here's the big one: Understanding OKRs which is also known as Objectives & Key Results.

The OKR goal-setting system, used by Google, Twitter, and The Gates Foundation, is goal-setting at its best. It shows you how to set stretch goals and use 'key results' to measure the success of the mini-goals.

These shorter term goals are intended to lead up to your giant objective. It's like using the magic of thinking big and also figuring out how the bunny gets in the hat in the first place.

OKR's should be applied at the organizational level, to maintain focus on the direction of the company. However, they are easier and highly productive to use on small or growing businesses.

If I asked you how to design a custom manufacturing machine to make octagon-shaped cereal right now, could you do it?

Me neither. But "Honeycomb" is a cereal that exists (I'm sure of it because I used to eat it by the bowl when I was a kid), so someone does. Not us, though.

We all have strengths and weaknesses, and you guessed it, here's where I recommend you start taking off some of those hats! If you are trying to do everything, like many solopreneurs and entrepreneurs, you're likely to miss your target.

Be clear on your objective, where your skills and knowledge can help you achieve the goal, and what you're missing.

Find someone who has what you're missing and get to work on your highest and best use of your skill set.

The magic is real, so get to work - and maybe this weekend you can have a glass of wine to celebrate.
