Have you tasted Poison?
What is poison? Have you tasted it before? How was the experience? Is it really necessary to taste it? How can we avoid it? Let's dig deeper.
Poison is a substance that harms our body, mind, or soul, or a combination of these elements. In day-to-day life, we call anything a poison that is not good for us. This includes toxic chemicals, threatening words, loose talk, insulting others, consumption of addictive substances (slow killers), selfish nature, parasitic living, or forcing negative beliefs onto others. All these can be categorized as poison.
Now, if you ask people if they have tasted it, some will say yes, some will say no, and others may not say anything. The whole idea when you ask this question is to check the knowledge or experience of the person. There are people in this world who will judge you on a scale defined by others (which may vary according to time, place, and circumstances). If someone has tasted it, they may try to put forth their opinion and attempt to convince others to act positively (not to taste it), negatively (to taste it), or remain neutral (not to interfere with others' choices and desires). If someone has not tasted it before, they may become tempted to taste it. As for the third set of people who do not want to share anything on this topic, we need to set them aside for our analysis purposes.
What about the experience? Was it good, bad, or indifferent? If someone says it was good, they have now fallen into a trap. As mentioned by Premanand Govind Sharan Maharaj of Vrindavan, when somebody has a bad desire to commit some sin, all their good karmas will start giving some positive reaction (Sukh) and that person may seem to be flourishing. But wait, it is just a matter of time. The desire to commit sin traps that person into a false belief of success. But as you know the nature of a spring, the more you squeeze it, the more it will jump out with great force. And when the time ripens, the person gets the reaction of their bad karma/sin.
Now the important question arises: do we really need to taste the poison knowing the bad effects of it? The answer is pretty simple. Learn from your own mistakes and, much more importantly, learn from others' mistakes. You see people drinking alcohol and taking prohibited drugs, receiving bad reactions in terms of health and quality of life. Then why would you experiment with tasting the poison in the name of inquisitiveness? I always see Mother Nature giving subtle hints for what is right and what is wrong. Your inner conscience will guide you if you need help. You just have to be submissive and humble to seek help. If you ask a person smoking a cigarette when and how they started smoking, you will find that a friend suggested or tempted them into smoking. Hence, the real test comes in times of adversity or difficulty. Just prepare yourself and learn the art of living a meaningful life (with purpose).
If you are convinced enough, you now need to devise a strategy to avoid it. It may sound socially unacceptable, but stick to the principles and feel the difference. Believe me, you actually have to lead your own life. People will be able to just guide you and motivate you. God has given everyone the responsibility to exercise this fundamental right of learning and improving.
Stay away from poison and let others know the formula. Live healthy, stay healthy, and preach healthy.
