European Commission adopts the European Sustainability Reporting Standards

The Commission has adopted the first set of 12 European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) for use by all companies under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). European companies have entered an enhanced sustainability reporting dispensation with the first lot of company disclosures expected to take place in 2024.

The standards cover the full range of environmental, social, and governance issues, and will usher in a sustainable European economy. The standards were developed after discussions with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and are therefore a bridge between the EU and global reporting standards.

The common standards will enable companies to better access to sustainable finance by disclosing and managing their sustainability performance more efficiently.

Abu Dhabi’s new climate change strategy focuses on clean energy

Executive director of Integrated Environment Policy and Planning at the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi Sheikha Al Mazrouei, has said clean energy, particularly solar power will be at the centre of the new ambitious Climate Change Strategy for 2023-2027 launched in July.

The UAE’s energy portfolio includes solar, natural gas and nuclear. Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) announced in March that 80 per cent of the total power demand in Abu Dhabi is using renewable and clean energy from its solar and nuclear energy plants. Nuclear energy is the largest source of clean electricity in the UAE, with the Barakah nuclear power plant generating up to 48 per cent of Abu Dhabi’s carbon-free electricity.

Ms Al Mazrouei said the main reduction of emissions projected in the strategy will be achieved by introducing low-carbon power generation and renewable energy.

New Google tools to help businesses, cities, map rooftop solar potential, air quality

Google has launched three mapping tools that organize environmental information and useful data for companies and cities in their decarbonization efforts and in the development of sustainability products. Companies can also use them to help people make healthier data-backed decisions.

Drawing on the tech giant's artificial intelligence (AI), aerial imagery and environmental data, the new sustainability APIs in the Google Maps Platform will help address climate change by providing up-to-date information about solar potential, air quality and pollen levels.

For example, businesses can use the new Solar API to map the potential of solar energy in an area. It uses mapping and computing resources to make detailed rooftop solar potential data available for more than 320 million buildings across 40 countries.

The Air Quality API in Google Maps shows reliable air quality data, pollution heatmaps and pollutant details for more than 100 countries around the world. While the Pollen API shows current pollen information for the most common allergens in over 65 countries.

UAE to establish blockchain-powered national carbon credit system

The UAE has signed an agreement with a blockchain company to create a national carbon credit system using blockchain technology ahead of the COP28 global climate summit.

The deal was signed between the UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCE), the UAE-based Industrial Innovation Group (IIG), and Venom Foundation, an Abu Dhabi-based blockchain company.

In line with UAE's ambition to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the deal will establish the world’s first national system for carbon credits using blockchain technology.  The agreement will support enhancement of sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental health through use of blockchain in managing carbon credit issuance, transfer, calculation, tracking and digitization.

This enables government entities like MoCCE to sell or issue credits to businesses, which can then utilize these credits to emit a designated amount of carbon within a specific timeframe or trade them with other organizations seeking to offset their emissions.
