The Health Benefits of a Walking Pad: My Personal Experience
When the pandemic began, I transitioned from a full-time office-based role to working from home for two years, followed by a hybrid role. While the initial boost in productivity was nice, I began to realise the health risks of sitting all day long, as I wasn't taking as many breaks or frequent laps around the office.
Standing desks became very popular and I wanted to take it a step further last summer and invested in a walking pad that slides under my desk, making it easy to hit my FitBit steps. And let me tell you, I've already felt the benefits.
Boosted physical activity: With a walking pad, you can walk at a slow and steady pace while you work, instead of sitting or standing still for hours on end. This helps get your blood flowing and keeps your body active even when you're stuck behind a desk all day. I was amazed at how easy it was to stroll around on informal zoom calls or even breeze through a two-hour data task while strolling.
Improved cardiovascular health: Walking regularly is known to improve cardiovascular health and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. With a walking pad, you can easily incorporate more walking into your daily routine without leaving your desk. On a typical day, I would only reach about 2,000 steps, but with the walking pad, I comfortably hit around 13,000 steps. In fact, last week I even broke my own record and hit 22,000 steps on a Monday, all while being productive at my desk.
Reduced back pain: This was a game-changer for me. After long workdays, my back and hips were begging for relief. Sitting for prolonged periods can put a lot of strain on your back and lead to chronic pain. Using a standing desk with a walking pad can help alleviate this pain by reducing the time spent sitting and stretching those vital muscles, also improving flexibility.
Increased energy levels: Sitting for long periods can leave you feeling tired and unmotivated, but adding movement into your workday can help combat fatigue and give you a natural energy boost. Incorporating a walking pad into your routine is an effective way to stay active and avoid feeling sluggish. Personally, I find that incorporating movement throughout the day keeps me alert and focused, leading to increased productivity not only in my work but also in my personal life.
Improved mental health: As someone who has struggled with mental health issues throughout my life, I know firsthand the positive impact that exercise can have. By incorporating a walking pad into my standing desk setup, I can reap the mental health benefits of exercise during my workday without feeling guilty about neglecting my self-care. Walking regularly has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase overall feelings of well-being, and I have certainly noticed these benefits since I started using my walking pad.
My Set Up
If you're considering incorporating a walking pad into your workspace, I highly recommend it. It has been one of my best investments in 2022, and I continue to get questions from colleagues and friends who see me bopping along during a Zoom call. Here are the products that I personally opted for, which I hope you'll enjoy:
Electric Standing Desk:
I absolutely love my Fezibo standing desk! Not only does it have a sleek and modern design, but the quality is also top-notch. The desk frame operates with an electric motor that runs smoothly and quietly, allowing me to adjust the height with ease. It offers up to four preset heights, so I can easily switch from sitting to standing and always have the perfect adjustment. I chose the bamboo desk top for its beautiful blend of metal and wood, which adds a warm and natural touch to my workspace.

Walking Pad (Amazon):
Sadly, this is no longer available on Amazon, but after spending a considerable amount of time reading reviews, I opted for a walking pad that does not fold but can be stored upright behind my door when not in use. The pad is very quiet and cannot be heard when I am on calls. It comes with a nifty remote and can be controlled through an app on my phone.
Spec: 2 in 1 Folding Treadmill, FLYLINKTECH Home Quiet Treadmill with Bluetooth Control, Wide Running Belt, Transport Wheels, 14 km/h, 12 Exercise Modes, LCD Display (Two-year warranty)
Cat Window Perch :)
Of course, I had to consider my furry at-home colleagues - my cats - when setting up my workspace. So, in addition to my walking pad, I also added a cat window perch next to my desk. They love watching the birds outside while I work my way through my to-do list, and it keeps them entertained and out of mischief. Plus, I don't have to worry about any unexpected shoelace attacks!
