Health Coaching: What it is and what it is not

This article is a brief summary to talk about what a health coach is, what it is not, and how we can help individuals reach their health goals. I hope it helps you understand what we do and if you need to find out more drop me a message.

Definition and Role of a Health Coach

A Health Coach is a wellness guide and supportive mentor who empowers individuals to take charge of their health and achieve their personal wellness goals. This holistic approach differs from traditional medical or clinical advice; it involves understanding the broader picture of an individual's lifestyle, their behaviours, and their personal goals in various aspects of their health, including physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Health Coaching encompasses all of this.

What a Health Coach Does

  1. Personalised Guidance: Health Coaches provide customised advice and support based on individual health conditions, lifestyle, and preferences. We work with clients to create tailored action plans that address specific wellness goals. This can include anything from weight management to managing stress, motivation, mindset. We start with exactly where the client is at right now, and work on where they want to be. It's a very exciting journey for both the client and the Health Coach!
  2. Holistic Approach: As Health Coaches we consider all facets of a person’s life, from diet and exercise to stress management and emotional and mental health and well being. This comprehensive approach ensures that the health coaching plan for the client is balanced, sustainable, and more importantly achievable. (More about SMART goals in another article).
  3. Accountability Partner: Regular sessions with a Health Coach help keep clients accountable to their health and wellness goals. This support significantly increases the likelihood of maintaining long-term health changes. It offers the clients perspective but the onus is on the client to take responsibility for their health and with coach support, manage their health behaviour accordingly.
  4. Education and Resources: Health Coaches are knowledgeable about health and wellness and share this information with their clients, empowering clients to make informed decisions about their health. It is therefore a partnership with full support and guidance.

What a Health Coach is Not:

  1. Not a Medical Doctor: As Health Coaches we do not diagnose conditions or prescribe medications. Our role is to support and not replace healthcare clinicians. However, we offer tailored support to clients wishing to manage chronic conditions and support them with this through sustainable and realistic lifestyle changes. It is a continual partnership between the client and the coach.
  2. Not always a Personal Trainer: Although we often provide support on physical fitness, our role is much broader and will include some aspects of nutrition and physical fitness from a whole health perspective. Some coaches are personal trainers and focus on physical fitness and nutrition specifically. They will of course incorporate behaviour change into their plans as this is imperative with any health and fitness plans.
  3. Not a Therapist: While as Health Coaches we support emotional and mental wellbeing, we do not treat mental health disorders or offer psychological therapy. We can support your mental health through mindfulness techniques Breathwork, and other stress management modalities. We will always refer on to professional mental health services if needed as per our scope of practice.

Benefits of a Health Coach

Physical Wellbeing

  • Improved Physical Health: Health Coaches help clients develop and stick to healthier eating habits, exercise routines, and other lifestyle changes that lead to improved physical health. Included in this this could be things like mindset, motivation, mindful eating, and gentle exercise regimes guided by where the client is at physically right now and slowly building on that with regular sessions and check ins.
  • Disease Prevention: Through lifestyle changes and education, clients can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Through a healthy diet, exercise, sleep and stress reduction, this whole health approach can enhance a clients wellbeing and impact greatly on the improvement of chronic health conditions.

Mental Wellbeing

  • Stress Management: Health Coaches teach techniques for managing stress as discussed above, which can reduce the risk of health issues related to stress such as hypertension, heart disease, anxiety and depression.
  • Improved Mental Clarity: A balanced diet, proper hydration and proper exercise and sleep guided by a Health Coach, can improve focus and mental clarity, which will in turn will improve all areas of a clients life.

Emotional Wellbeing

  • Enhanced Self-Confidence: Achieving health goals often boosts self-confidence because individuals feel better about their physical appearance and capabilities. Confidence is a huge determinant of how successful a clients health coach journey will be and as a Health Coach we focus on this greatly so the clients confidence can build and improve.
  • Better Emotional Balance: Techniques such as mindfulness and positive thinking, which a Health Coach often incorporates into sessions, can help maintain emotional and psychological stability. The mind body connection is something I often incorporate in to my coaching sessions with clients and it has a huge impact on the clients health journey. Emotional resilience is a huge factor in managing stressful life events and I focus on this a lot with clients.

Why Invest in a Health Coach?

Investing in a Health Coach is investing in a personalised guide to better health and wellness. Here are some reasons why it is worth the investment:

  1. Customised Approach: As Health Coaches we tailor our plans and strategies to fit clients health needs, which greatly enhances the effectiveness of health interventions compared to generic plans. We start with where the client is at right now, and focus on where they want to be.
  2. Support and Motivation: The journey to better health is not always easy. A Health Coach provides the necessary encouragement and motivation to keep individuals focused on their goals. This is imperative for momentum and continual success.
  3. Sustainable Change: Unlike quick-fix diets or intense fitness programs, Health Coaches help build sustainable habits that contribute to long-term health. Behaviour change is a big part of what health coaches do, alongside educating the client and supporting them with their health goals and acting as an accountability partner.
  4. Comprehensive Health Improvement: With a focus on all areas of wellbeing, including mental and emotional health, working with a Health Coach can lead to comprehensive lifestyle changes, ultimately leading to a healthier, happier life in all areas.
