Guwahati is the largest city in Assam and Northeast India. Dispur, the state capital, is situated within the city. The city is the second-largest metropolitan area in eastern India after Kolkata and one of the fastest developing cities in India. Railway: Guwahati is connected by train with all major cities of India. Guwahati railway station became the first railway station to run entirely on solar power.

Roadway: The length of surfaced roads within the city is 218 km (135 mi). The national highways connects Guwahati with rest of India. It is a three-hour drive to the Bhutanese border town of Samdrup Jongkhar.

Waterway: The Inland Water Transport Department is headquartered at Pandu port in Guwahati. The waterways transportation services in Guwahati are used for transporting bulk goods and cargo, and for movement of passenger and tourist vessels.

Growth Plan of Guwahati

The Guwahati metropolitan area is all set to expand by 66 sq. km within 2025 to cope with the population boom in the next decade. Three new towns have been planned in the newly included area. Apart from new roads, transport systems and water supply networks, the master plan has proposed 70 neighborhood centers, each having two senior secondary and two primary schools, 16 general colleges, four additional technical centres, a new university campus at Kharghuli and a new medical college in a proposed education and research hub.

This is indicative of the shortage of 471 Sub-Centres and 98 Community Health Centres in the state. Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Guwahati – 450 Beds
