He'll do 80 pushups

He'll do 80 pushups

I’m sitting at my desk and the email begins:

Given increasing concerns about travel…

It’s January, we’re looking at the strongest year on record for Dear World. Speeches, storytelling experiences, domestic, international: You name it, we have it booked.

I received the email seven weeks before the United States woke up to the bottom: the stock market, the cancellation of the final four and all meaningful gatherings. I’ll spare you the rest. You know the rest.

My father is an alcoholic who's been sober since the early 1970s. He still attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings (I got approval for this email, btw). Two tenants of AA are "the next right step" and "keep coming back, it works."

I’ve always admired my father’s dedication, his resilience and his discipline. Not only in his work in AA, but in his approach to life. He’ll turn 80 this month, and for as long as I can remember he’s done a push up to correspond with his age on his birthday. Typically, he begins training for this two months in advance. On the phone the other day, he said, “I think I’ll get there this year. But completing 80 push ups? They may not look great.”

Here’s what I love about my dad, even at 80, and even though his pushups won’t look great, he’s still going to finish them.

Resilience, dedication, discipline.

The quarantine has refocused my own dedication, resilience and discipline. What are my personal and professional outputs? I know some will be valuable to you:
