There are certain times when you get the feeling that the person you are talking with, is a dreamer in action. At that time, your dreams almost instantly get fed by this person and you are getting to hear how their creativity and their hunger to become something better made those dreams a reality.

The hard work, the long hours, the stress all come behind the success factor. From a certain point of view these creative minds have a loneliness illusion around them for all of us and it seems as if they are having a very raw , hard approach to everything they get their hands on. Hubert Pierre Pouches, owner and head designer of San Diego-based brand Rufskin, started his career a lot differently designing for women for many years when he decided that it is time for him to follow his heart on making a buzz in the mens world. He designs the line, comes up with the patterns and design them by hand , then he photographs his creations on models, mainly Logan Swiecki-Taylor, and the results come up to look like haute couture look books.

While the rest of the industry speeds up, Rufskin plods along slowly, methodically, stuck in its ways of following their passion to create unique patterns . Image after image, you can certainly understand that the team behind Rufskin has a lot more to say than just be another underwear brand.

- Who is Hubert? 

- I was born in Catalunya France, did my studies at ESMOD in Paris and moved to Brazil for few years, worked in France for few companies, opened a Modeling Agency and moved to the US in 93.

- What favourite quote do you live by? 

- Do pretty things!

- I will take you back some years. When the idea of Rufskin as a label was in the table and you were having conversations after conversations on if you will go for it or not. How much did your original vision changed until today?

- Actually we didn't go through too many conversations. Rufskin was born from a very spontaneous thought and the company shaped itself as we went.

- You love the desert. You love taking pictures of it, love spending time there, and love creating amazing work while living your days there. How did this love grow?

- It was love at first sight! The  crisp light, the landscape and that incredible energy. there is always something to discover in the middle of what looks like « empty ».

- People often refer to your pieces as special and unique items. What is it that you love about this technique?

- I try to go to the essence of the garment, the « cut » is essential, shaping the male body has been neglected for too long, simple, sharp and precise is the reason why our clothes fit the way they do.

- Rufskin is the art of the male body. That's my opinion on your brand and how you promote the male beauty through art. Every single picture of Rufskin is an anthem to a man's body aesthetics and ,in several occasions, combined with spectacular landscapes and projects. How did you end up that this is how Rufskin is going to be branded? 

- As I said the RUSKIN brand is a pure evolution, it shapes itself in function of what we are « tripping » at this exact moment. I do not follow seasons, I don’t do full collections, it is a more organic process, and we craft everything here in California.

- How do you feel when Logan, your main model for many years, receives so many compliments wearing your creations? 

- LOL, this collaboration with Logan is like my work at RUSKIN. Spontaneous, creative and based on a true friendship.The fact that the result is appreciated by many is a reward of our work together.

- How do you balance creativity with commerce? 
- Painfully sometimes, but it is part of running your own company, my partner Douglas and I are getting much better at it every day!

- Who do you envision wearing your work? Would you ever consider designing womenswear? 

-I did design for decades for women, from lingerie to couture but since 2002 I decided to do what I like to do, and this is creating for men.I see so many different type of customer and that is one of my most exiting reward, age and shape has nothing to do with how you want to project your image to others, so I am very grateful when I see anyone wearing our products.

- Do you have a specific research process when you start a new collection?

- Not at all! I am an Aries and I work the same way that I live by……I just « trip » on something and I do it! I do my own patterns so in a way it is like sculpting the garment and shooting it is the last stage. 

- How do you explain your success? 

- LOL, hard work, happiness and loving what you do! 

- What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company? 

- Follow your instincts, do what you really love to do, don’t loose yourself trying to please everyone and respect the others as you respect yourself.

- What are some new pieces you are working on, What are your plans for the coming future? 

- I am working on a new concept for the swim line, we developed a new material that allows me to create my own colors and a minimal construction of the garment, some new jeans are also on the process and we are going to shoot the new line in the south of France in a very unique location…… to be continued!
