The rights granted to inventors at the very beginning of America were revolutionary. Granting the common person ownership of what he or she invented didn't just enable America to become a world power and world leader in innovation, it changed the course of mankind. Real innovation has marked the progress of mankind, and it was jump-started by what our Founders did in 1790.
But, US Inventors and startups aren't able to use their own idea due to the current state of our broken patent system. Inventors and startups are not being given the exclusive right to their discoveries.
We are making serious progress on this front. We have achieved more support for good patent legislation right now than any other bill has had in almost a decade, but we must keep pushing.
WHAT'S HAPPENING:
DIRECTOR KATHI VIDAL Kathi Vidal was appointed Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and agency Director in April of this year. On May 25th, she hosted one of her Listening Session events in San Jose, California. This event was one of her first appearances in her new role as Director.
To kick off her new role, Kathi Vidal is hosting a series of listening sessions; a tour of events that she claims will create discussion within the innovation community including inventors, entrepreneurs, and startups.
“I look forward to learning from current and aspiring innovators across all regions and demographics to better understand the variety of perspectives on issues that affect them," said Director Vidal. "We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the innovation community and other government agencies to help bring innovation to impact for the betterment of society. Let this be the start of a constructive dialogue to foster an intellectual property (IP) system that works for all.”

During this event, we learned some of her viewpoints regarding some of our main concerns such as the PTAB. We will continue to further our knowledge regarding Kathi Vidal. Hopefully, the new director will earnestly consider the views, concerns, and experiences of small, genuine inventors.
This was an enormous turnout given such short notice! Thank you to everyone who could join this event, in-person or virtual, and thank you to those that submitted questions and concerns. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and USI is grateful for your support and efforts in this fight to restore innovation in the US.

Our goal with this is to emphasize just how many of you are affected by our current patent system and are in support of HR 5874. If you’re not sure what to say, you can follow this script below: “Hi, my name is ___ from ____ and I support HR 5874, The Restoring America’s Leadership in Innovation Act.” It takes less than 30 seconds to record! You can submit your videos using this link. These short clips from you guys will be compiled into a video for your representatives, as well as getting posted to our page! TOWN HALLS: Town Halls are a great opportunity to make the needs of inventors known. We have the attention of Congress, is crucial that you help drive their decision in cosponsoring HR 5874. Attending these meetings is one of the best ways to speak directly with your representative to shed light on the struggles startups and inventors face.
PHONE CALLS: Calling your US Representative is another great way to speak directly with them. Like the town halls, we need you to bring light to the importance of passing HR 5874. You can call the U.S. Capitol at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative's office. If you don’t know who your representative is, you can provide your zip code. It takes two minutes to make a significant impact! All you need to do is say that you would like for them to cosponsor Rep. Massie’s Bill, HR 5874. “Hello. My name is ______. I’m calling to ask you to consider cosponsoring Thomas Massie’s bill, HR 5874, The Restoring America’s Leadership in Innovation Act. This bill will reverse the consequences made to our patent system through the America Invents Act of 2011.
