Early on in my career, I didn’t understand the importance of managing up. I sat at my desk, kept my head down, and did what I thought was good work. And what happens if your boss doesn’t know what you're working on? And what happens if your boss’ boss doesn’t know who you are and what you contribute to the organization?

In this week’s episode of Brown Table Talk, we unpack this topic: Here is why you need to manage up. Not managing up cost me career opportunities. At one point it even cost me my job. For too long, I felt managing up was political or something that wasn’t worth my time. Because I was focused on just being at work, doing the work and making an impact.

Here’s the switch that flipped for me in my head: managing up is critical. So, now, I don’t shy away from managing up. I no longer think of “managing up” as impolite. I think about it as advocating for my career. Especially during economic downturns, we all need to be showcasing our value and our contributions to our organizations.
