Here's what I really thought of The UX Writing Academy.

Ok, I'm taking a minute🕰️. I want to share a moment of gratitude🙌, lend a helping hand 🫱 to other aspiring UX Writers (if I can), and maybe just maybe give myself a little pat on the back.

Yesterday, in between writing copy 📝 for a client and helping my daughter practice her crescent kicks 🥋 (for taekwondo), I got a message asking if I could spare a moment to discuss my experiences at the UX Writing Academy.

I was happy to oblige and as I recounted my experiences in the program I began to relive the day I decided to sign up for the academy. I was nervous😬, I was excited😁, and to be honest I had no clue what I was doing🥸.

In the weeks and months leading to that day, I had been frozen🥶. After more than a decade as a teacher👩 🏫 and 4 years spent giving my daughter a wonderful start in life 👶, it was time to figure out what was next for me. I had no clue what to do 🤔 and I felt the pressure of time running out. I needed to make a decision.

I explored social work but found that I would need to make a commitment to returning to school full-time👩 🎓. I looked into instructional design and realized that I didn't feel confident in my technical skills 🫤. I spoke with continual improvement specialists and came away feeling less than passionate😒. I was lost and beyond frustrated with the process.

I had met with career counselors, tapped into my connections, and just could not pick a path. The commitments all felt too big. Too much time 🕰️. Too expensive 💵. Too uncertain 😶.

What changed all of that was good fortune. At the recommendation of a career coach, I was working every week to build up my presence on LinkedIn. One day while I was doing that I stumbled upon a friend I hadn't spoken to in quite some time. He had recently announced 📢 his new position as a Senior UX Writer and I was curious. I'd never heard of it before so I looked it up 🔎 and couldn't believe it🙀.

This was it! UX Writing sounded like the perfect job for me🥳! I was skeptical though. It sounded too good to be true. I decided to reach out and ask that friend if he could spare a moment to tell me about his job and how he got into the field.

That very week we sat down and he told me his story. He described his typical workday, confirmed the salary potential💸 and most importantly told me how he had done it. It all boiled down to a program called the UX Writing Academy. He had discovered it💡, done his research, and taken a leap of faith during the pandemic and seemingly never looked back.

The more that he told me about the program the more confident I felt. He described how helpful the drill-down exercises had been👨 💻 , and showed me the portfolio 📔he came away with. He talked about his amazing experiences during the real industry project and had wonderful things to say about the personal mentorship he received🫂.

Having someone who you personally know and trust recommend something is powerful💪. My uncertainties melted away. That conversation was on a Thursday. I spent that evening doing some research of my own and trying to explain to my family what it was that I wanted to do 🤣. The next day I signed up 🖊️. With classes set to begin the following Monday, I didn't have time to second-guess myself. I bought a notebook📒 and some new pens (as a former teacher I ADORE school supplies lol) and jumped in with both feet 👣.

That was last April. Today I am working as a UX Writer and truly living my #bestlife😃. To say that I am grateful is an understatement.

So why this long post? In part, it was cathartic. I wanted to celebrate what I've accomplished👏 . In what was an uncertain time for me personally, I took a chance on myself, and worked hard😅, and it paid off.

So thinking 💭 back to my friend who gave me his time 🕰️ that day last year, I want to pay it forward. I want to offer to help someone else who is trying to find their path🧭.

Without further ado, here's what I loved about the UX Writing Academy.

21-day money-back 💰 guarantee: I knew that if the program wasn't a good fit I would come out of it ok.

Program length: 6 months📆 was exactly how long I needed. It gave me time to feel expert, but the end was always in sight.

Certification📜: A lot of the other programs I looked into didn't offer an actual credential. I believed that walking away with a certificate in hand would set me apart from my competition in the field (and it did).

Cost🤑: Is it cheap? Nope, but you get what you pay for and it was a heck of a lot less than the other programs I had explored. I also appreciated that they had a payment plan that worked well for my budget.

Mentorship 🤝: Each student receives a personal mentor (working in UX Writing) and my mentor was AMAZING! I was assigned to Sarah Kessler . She's talented, approachable, patient and always willing to lend an ear👂. Her feedback on my work was invaluable, she had knowledgeable answers to my many questions🙋 and offered some great insights when it came time to begin my job hunt 🔍.

The Real Industry Project 💻👷: This was the only program I came across that offered this option to its students and the experience I had was out of this world 🌎. I worked with a team of 6 talented students for an omnichannel communications company. Under the leadership of our amazing project manager Anja Wedberg , we got to put our skills to the test in a real setting. This was where my personal confidence and growth as a UX Writer really came full circle for me.

After the program: The entire UX Writing Hub team is awesome! Yuval Keshtcher ✍ , Aaron Raizen , Ilana Rabinoff-Sofer , and the mentors are personally invested in student success and it shows. When the program was over things didn't go quiet. To this day I continue to receive job leads and communication through the alumni Slack channel. Even though I'm happily employed at the moment it is so nice to know 🧠 that they've got my back!

What do I love about my new career in UX Writing?

I assume an answer more specific than "everything" would be most helpful, so here are a few of my favorite aspects of the job.

✅ The work is challenging 🤓 and dynamic.

✅ I have a productive outlet for my creativity 🖌️.

✅ The field attracts empaths, so I've met some amazing people😉!

✅ My schedule ⏰ is flexible, which is a huge plus as a parent.

✅ The pay💵 is phenomenal (especially as a former educator).

The Hub has truly been a lifeline🔗 for me. So if I happen to have gotten this unwieldy post in front of you and you're wondering if the program is right for you, send me a message. I'm genuinely more than happy to answer your questions and try to help you make a choice that's right for you. I feel like it's the least I can do.

I happen to know that the next cohort starts on April 17th and I assure you from my personal experience...today, tomorrow, or even a day or two after it has begun is not too late to take the leap 🤓.

I really do hope that I hear from someone, but if you'd prefer to do your own investigating I totally understand.

In closing, I just want to say a really heartfelt thank you to all the people who were a part of this journey! I wouldn't be where I am today without you ❤️!
