There is a Hero in all of us....
With it being #MentalHealthAwareness week and all the focus on Covid-19 at the moment I thought I would share a different perspective on the NHS, it’s a personal story which I don’t normally post on any platform, let alone LinkedIn, but I think it is pertinent as we navigate through challenging times.
My Dad is 70 years old and not really seen as a hero, why would he be, he is just a normal bloke… he was a milkman for 42 years until he retired a few years ago due to a dodgy knee from too much dancing (he loves Elvis).
Towards the end of February, just as Covid-19 was taking a grip on the world, My Dad had an operation to remove part of his bowel, unfortunately it didn’t prevent the dreaded ‘C’ word and Dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. Treatment needed to start as soon as possible, but was made very difficult with the Corona-virus, but from the phenomenal work that the NHS does, he managed to get booked in for 6 weeks of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, every day Dad visited the hospital for his treatment, through lock-down, each time he went for his treatment, the new measures meant that he had to go in alone, no one else in the waiting rooms, no other patients around, just him and the NHS staff. Not once did he waiver, not once did he moan, he was brave and got it done.
Apparently, it is tradition to ring the bell when you have completed your treatment, and all the other patients clap and cheer each time the bells rings – it was different for Dad, as no one was there.
So when he got home, he rang a little bell to signify then end of his treatment – but for me it signified more than that, it shows that what ever is thrown at us we can overcome it, if we stay focused and together we can get through it and if we have a positive mindset we can beat anything.
The NHS staff are all hero’s not because of Covid-19 but because they do what they do, everyday, they have always been hero’s.
But today my Dad is a hero for showing us all that if you put your mind to it, you can beat anything!
Thanks for sharing your unique perspective. Your story not only highlights the versatility and resilience of our healthcare workers but also reminds us of the human element often overlooked. Truly inspiring. 🙌 #NHSheroes

4yGreat post Lee and definitely a story that was worth sharing. A story that resonates closely with me as my dad suffered with bowl cancer and still with us today thanks to the NHS. He had treatment when everyone was around to support him so I take my hat off to your dad who had to deal with it during Covid-19. As you say the NHS are hero’s as is your dad. All the best you and your family.
Heartfelt story. Best wishes to you and your family x
