History - It's Personal

History - It's Personal

Written by Tino Mbara PMP, P.Eng

I too am human,

I breathe, sleep, eat, bathe.

But I can’t bathe the melanin off my skin,

The colour that makes you judge me,

I’m told I’m supposed to own it,

To love it,

Somehow to make me feel empowered.

Empowered by the movements,

Empowered by the riots,

Empowered by the wars that freed my ancestors from slavery,

Wars we face today.

I too am human,

I’m no different than you, or the person next to you,

I have a family, I breathe, I eat, I sleep,

But in my dreams…we are all the same,

We bleed, sleep, eat, and cry for humanity,

Oh, why won’t you share that dream with me?
