HOME FRAGRANCE TRENDS: TIPS AND ADVICE BY MAISON21G

As Bob Dylan once sang, “times - they are a-changin”.

This is especially true when it comes to home fragrances. The global market for home fragrances is experiencing something of a boom right now - it’s forecasted to surpass the $9 billion dollar mark by 2025. Of course, COVID has played a big part in this. Nobody can ignore the fact that more and more of us have shifted to working from home and spending more time in our houses and apartments. As such, curating a pleasant home ambience has become more of a requirement when once it was seen as an exclusive luxury - something we at Maison 21G have as central to our mission of democratising bespoke home scent creation for all.

It’s a truly exciting time for the home scent industry and one which is sure to drive no shortage of innovation and much-needed evolution within perfumery and beyond.

More choice, more freedom, and more opportunities for tailored home scents

Home scents primarily revolve around a small handful of devices, objects, and solutions with which to ‘infuse’ your space with a tailored fragrance. All of these different methods of diffusion provide heightened levels of sophistication and allow for greater degrees of personalisation and customisation. Let’s take a closer look at candles, reed diffusers, and oil burners trends and tips of usage.

Scented candles: a new definition of quality

Make no mistake, not all home fragrances are created equal. This is especially true when it comes to scented candles. We have found that synthetic paraffin wax is used in most scented candles (you’ll discover that most of the brands will refer to it as ‘mineral wax’ ), which uses a petroleum derivative to ensure a more stable wax. The result however, is an unsustainable product which is not the best for your health and the planet!

Here are my Maison 21G top tips for your bespoke scented candles:

  •  Choose candles made exclusively from natural wax - our Maison’s candles only use natural soy wax and a little coconut wax, but beeswax is a beautiful alternative with its own distinctive aroma.
  •  Look out for products featuring phthalates and CMR perfumes (you may have to ask, as these harmful ingredients are often kept well-hidden!) and insist on natural essential oils which bring an array of health benefits.
  •  Can’t find the perfect scent for your home? Personalise your own scented candles! At Maison 21G, we believe in putting the art of home scent creation in the hands of our customers, allowing them to blend the scent they want. Alternative, select the two perfume essences you wish to blend in the air with a beautiful Demi Lune Dual Candle.

Bespoke Reed Diffusers: How to Strike the Perfect Balance of Scents

We’ve watched with great pleasure how Reed Diffusers have grown in popularity in recent years, but with no real surprise; when it comes to aesthetic elegance, reliability, and value for money, these objects are truly hard to beat.  If you’re looking to make the most of your reed diffuser, consider these tips directly from the home scent experts at our Maison:

  •  Optimise your scent diffusion by switching the sticks around - changing the end which is in contact with the oil - every couple of weeks.
  • When you go on vacation or away from home for a couple of days, close your reed diffuser. The diffuser is made from a solution of alcohol and dowanol, and is designed to evaporate steadily and consistently in the air.
  • Tailor the scent of your reeds to suit your scent personality and preferred home ambience. We’ve discovered that green and red fruit notes tend to diffuse most successfully with reeds; combinations including Fig, Sage, Bergamot, Muguet, Pear, Red Fruit, Cassis, and Leafy notes have a beautiful impact!

Our recommendation at Maison: we love the pairings of Fig and Patchouli, Pear and Muguet, and Bergamot and Vetiver - perfect for elevating your home scent and enveloping your space in a sense of comfort, relaxation, and bliss.

Oil Burners: The Warming, Luxurious, and Ecological Choice

Elegant, beautiful, and enormously effective, oil burners are a truly sophisticated method of home scent diffusion. I worked closely with talented designers to come up with the Maison 21G Luciole oil burner - I wanted it to not only be a stunning way to create an opulent home ambience, but also a striking and distinctive decorative object too. Here’s how to use an oil burner to its maximum potential, with tips from Maison 21G:

  •   Unlike reed diffusers, oil burners are considered to be best suited to oriental, sweet, and woody notes, which diffuse beautifully with heat.
  • Our favourite scents to burn on our stylish Luciole oil burner are Havana, Incense, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood, and Cedar. All of these natural essences fill my home with the most wonderful, exotic, and calming fragrances, perfect for elevating the mood and relaxing the mind.

The art of Home Perfumery: blending with confidence for mood elevation

There have been countless studies into aromatherapy how different natural essences could influence your moods, heightening positivity, relieving stress, and increasing focus or desire. Here is a quick run-down of the different scents and oils, and the impact they have on our emotions.

  •   For relaxation, we always recommend Lavender, Orange Blossom, Rose, Sandalwood, Incense, and Cannabis.
  • To increase desire and introduce an aphrodisiac atmosphere, opt for Vanilla, Amber, Tonka Bean, Spices, Patchouli, and any of the oriental notes. Perfect for bedroom ambience!
  • You can purify and energise the mind with Sage, Lavender, Pine, Cypress, Peppermint, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Pomegranate, Geranium, Verbena, Linden, and Tea.
  •  Cedar, Vetiver, Patchouli, and Havana/Tobacco notes will help increase focus and an efficient home working ambience.
  •  An essence of elegance and confidence can be infused into the home with Tuberose, Peony, Mimosa, Jasmine, Freesia, Aubepine, Violet, Almond, Muguet, Baie, and Orris.
  •  Finally, to elevate an atmosphere of positivity, playfulness and joy, try Fig, Raspberry and Pear.

With imagination, creativity, and freedom of choice supported by a beautiful array of natural, sustainable, and high-quality scent essences, there’s no limit to the scents you can tailor for your home. At Maison 21G, we’re on a mission to bring luxury, opulence, sustainability, transparency in formulation, and bespoke sophistication into our everyday pleasures, one home scent solution at a time.
