Homeownership Racial Gap Narrower for Vets

Veteran status increases the homeownership rate for African Americans, Hispanics and Asians while making little difference in that for the white population, researchers with the Urban Institute found.

According to the UI study, “Impact of the US Military on Homeownership and Income,” the racial disparities in the homeownership rate are smaller for veterans than for the total U.S. population.

Overall, 78.2% of veterans and 42.7% of active-duty military are homeowners compared to 61.8% of non-military and 64.0% of the total U.S. population, the study said.

Among non-Hispanic whites, the homeownership rate for veterans and active-duty personnel is 82% and 46%, respectively, compared to 72% for the total U.S. population. For more details, see Inside FHA/VA Lending.
