The first 500 boards are always the trickiest...

We are excited to announce that Board Benchmarking , together with its global network of Board Advisory Partners (including Halex Consulting), has just carried out its 500th board review. This is a unique milestone that we suspect very few organisations in the world can match.

To mark the occasion, we will shortly be publishing a report sharing our key learnings and insights from these 500 boards, including:

  • One-quarter of Boards are dysfunctional
  • You won’t find an effective board that doesn’t have an effective Chair
  • A greater focus is required by many boards on organisational culture and integrity

Keep an eye out for our LinkedIn posts and webinars over the coming weeks to find out more.

Raising Your Game - leading practice risk guidance for boards and committees

Back in December 2019, on the day we published Raising the Bar at the Financial Reporting Council in London, several people suggested that the Risk Coalition should publish similar guidance for non-financial sector organisations. Several years, a global pandemic, Brexit and heaven knows how many Prime Ministers later, we have just written the first draft 'strawman' of our forthcoming guidance, Raising Your Game.

While still needing to go through many rounds of Working Group review and challenge, as well as a public consultation, we anticipate publishing Raising Your Game in Q1, 2024.

As with all the best not-for-profit ventures, the Risk Coalition works on a shoestring budget and is always looking for sponsors to support our important work.

If you think your organisation might be interested in sponsoring Raising Your Game, please get in touch at team@riskcoalition.org.uk

Risk Coalition Risk Committee Chairs' Forum

On Tuesday 26th September, I was pleased to chair the latest of our Risk Coalition Risk Committee Chairs' Forum roundtables, hosted by Ashurst Risk Advisory LLP in London.

The discussion topic was the Financial Reporting Council 's proposed changes to the UK Corporate Governance Code and we were lucky enough to be joined by Kate O'Neill, Financial Reporting Council Director of Stakeholder Engagement and Corporate Affairs, who was able to provide valuable additional context and insight into the proposals.

The result was a hugely engaging discussion and a recognition that some of the proposals around risk and internal controls ('UK SOX') are likely to require a significant effort by many Code firms to ensure they are in a position to comply - rather than explain - for their 2025 annual report and accounts.

You can read the Risk Coalition's blog of the discussion here: Risk management and internal controls: much (needed) work to do as a result of the proposed changes to the UK Corporate Governance Code — The Risk Coalition

If you are NED with an interest in risk and would like to join a future RCCF roundtable discussion, please register your details here https://lnkd.in/erb4uK-4

We hope to see you there!

Halex Consulting's response to the FRC's Code consultation

In early September, we submitted our formal response to the Financial Reporting Council 's public consultation on the proposed changes to the UK Corporate Governance Code.

Our biggest concern? What was missing from the document, rather than what was in it. There was nothing new on board risk committees.
