Happy Hotel Team
Do you know what your Hotel Manager’s team’s biggest concerns are today? Severe signs of burnout? No support from their Hotel Managers? Poor communication? Lack of feedback? Lack of trust and confidence in their Hotel Manager or just inter-team conflicts?
One of the most under-rated, but most important aspects of Hotel Management is taking the time to build rapport and trust with each person on their Hotel team. When you build this rapport, it helps you in less obvious, but equally important ways.
Building rapport will make your Hotel Team more motivated, more likely to listen to feedback and more loyal to you. To build this rapport, talk to your Hotel Team regularly and show them that you genuinely care about their lives beyond the Hotel.
Write important personal details down so you remember the most important things about each of them like their birthdays, anniversaries, children’s names and other important details. Listen to their concerns and offer your guidance when they talk to you.
Employee engagement is often low with their Hotel Managers. The main reasons behind this is often a Lack of career growth, not getting enough praise, bad relationships with their Hotel Managers and Hotel Leadership not reacting to their feedback.
Here is how you can Prevent the ‘Turnover’ on your Hotel Team. Assume that everyone is leaving and interviewing – this will help you prepare for that scenario as well as encourage you to think about preventing it!
Accept that what you are doing now is not necessarily right and be open to suggestions on how you can improve as a Hotel Manager.

Have open, honest, lengthy one-on-ones and be more intentional about uncovering your people’s concerns. Listen and show empathy and try to build rapport and a mutual understanding with your Hotel Team. Follow through on your promises and take action on their feedback if you can.
The key to stopping departures from your Hotel happening is to understand why people leave in the first place. Use your one on ones to uncover the root-cause of your team’s concerns and consistently act on what you learn. It is the ONLY way to fight the turnover in the long-term.
As a Hotel Manager, you are able to greatly improve the lives of your Hoteliers. The best way to ensure your Hotel Team’s happiness and improve your relationship with them is to start having regular one on ones. This is the case regardless of whether you are a Senior Hotel Manager or less junior Hotel Manager and regardless of the Department you are based.
