How was a 600-year-old 'Ghost Village' brought to life?
Saur a 600-year-old village in the heart of Tehri Garhwal was facing a troubling issue. Year after year, its people were leaving their ancestral roots, seeking better economic and education prospects elsewhere in bigger towns and cities.
Slowly, the village emptied, until only twelve families remained. This tale was not unique to Saur but to hundreds of villages in Uttarakhand, which were declared ‘ghost villages‘ by the state government. A stark reminder of the dwindling population of our ancestral villages.
Saur held a treasure of stories waiting to be unveiled. Determined to preserve the culture and the community, we embarked on a journey to gather stories from every corner of Saur, even reaching out to those who had migrated away.
Inspired by the rich tradition of the Garhwal School of Painting, these stories were transformed into stunning art murals by the talented muralist Poornima Sukumar
The village walls became our canvases, which were painted with the vibrant tales of its residents, forming an open-air art gallery. The art not only helped celebrate the community's heritage but also opened doors to new opportunities.
Educational programs, and economic ventures such as digital fellowships, residency programs, and tourism development initiatives, flourished as a result.
Moreover, the spirit of the community was reignited as they revived a 50-year-old festival, breathing life back into Saur and attracting tourists, thus creating avenues for livelihood. Remarkably, five families even reverse-migrated and bought back their ancestral homes!
