Frequently Asked Questions About Find My iPhone

Here are answers to some common questions about adding devices to and using Find My iPhone.

Does Find My iPhone work if the device is offline?

Find My iPhone relies on internet connectivity to locate devices, either via WiFi or cellular data. If a device is turned off or does not have an internet connection, you will not be able to view its current location.

However, with iOS 15 and newer, there is an offline finding option that can help locate devices for up to 24 hours after disconnected.

Do I need to install an app to use Find My?

The Find My iPhone app comes pre-installed on all iPhones and iPads by default. You do not need to download anything.

For non-iPhone/iPad devices like AirPods or Apple Watch, you may need to install the Find My app from the App Store to manage and track those items. This app lets you locate devices associated with your Apple ID that don't have onboard Settings apps.

Can I locate a lost iPhone if it's powered off?

Unfortunately Find My iPhone does not work if the missing iPhone is powered off. In order for the app to pinpoint a device's location, that device needs to be powered on and have internet access over WiFi or cellular.

The good news is that iOS devices generally have excellent battery life. There is a good chance a lost iPhone still has some charge remaining for you to locate it in Find My, especially if location services are disabled to conserve power.

Will factory resetting remove Find My iPhone?

Performing a factory reset or wiping your iPhone does not automatically disconnect it from Find My iPhone. As long as the device remains associated with your iCloud account, you can use Find My to display a message, remotely erase, or track it.

To fully remove Find My iPhone capability, the previous owner needs to sign out of iCloud completely and wipe the device beforehand. This makes sure the activation lock gets released properly during setup on the wiped device.

Does Find My drain my iPhone battery?

When actively tracking or locating a device, Find My iPhone uses GPS, cellular data, Bluetooth, and background app refresh. This can drain some battery. However the impact is generally minimal, only a few percentage points over several hours.

To help conserve battery life, make sure GPS and background app refresh options are enabled conservatively under iPhone Settings. Disable location services entirely if trying to preserve power on a lost device.

Can I track someone without them knowing?

No. Find My iPhone always requires consent from other parties before sharing device locations. To track someone else, like family members, they first need to enable location sharing with you under their own iCloud account settings. Unauthorized tracking attempts go against Find My’s policies.
