How any teacher can create an AI solution in minutes

The very simple answer is this:

You don't need this guide to create a GPT. OpenAI specifically made this process have an incredibly low barrier to entry. 

All you have to do is tell it what you want it to do using natural language 👇

However, I have some tips for getting better results. 

Before we jump in, why would you want to create a GPT?

Think of it this way:

For the first time ever teachers with little to no technical skills can now create AI tools in minutes that can automate their workflow and solve problems for their colleagues and organisation. 

Teachers creating bespoke solutions for other teachers is powerful 💪🏽

Imagine your school has a bespoke AI app store with in-house created solutions that help you to chat with your teaching and learning policy, transform a resource into a lesson plan that abides by your school's pedagogical approach and so much more. 

This is possible right now. 

One caveat: You will need an individual ChatGPT plus subscription to create and access GPTs or an enterprise license for your organisation to internally share GPTS.

It is worth it.

Here are some of the features you will get that will transform your AI experience:

  • Access to the most powerful commercially available AI chatbot
  • Ability for ChatGPT to browse the web for you
  • Access to ChatGPT Voice (have natural verbal conversations with ChatGPT)
  • Access ChatGPT Vision (Upload images to ChatGPT for analysis)
  • Access to Dall-e 3 image creator
  • Access to Advanced Analytics, which turns ChatGPT into an AI data analyst
  • Access to the Plug in store, which adds a variety of functionality to ChatGPT
  • Opt out of allowing ChatGPT to use your prompts to train its AI
  • Ability to access, make and share GPTs

Right, let's jump into GPTs.

Like I established above, you can just ask it to do what you want it to do, however I go straight to the 'Configure' tab. 

Here's what the 'Configure' page looks like for my 'Children's Story Book Generator' GPT:

The name and description of your bot will be publically viewable.

I'll come back to instructions in a second. 

Conversation starters let your users get started with your AI tool, without having to write an initial request.

You can then upload documents that the GPT will use as it's knowledge base (this is not mandatory, as ChatGPT can use its own knowledge base too).

You can then add the capabilities of web browsing, image creation and/or code interpreter. 

For instructions, the most important part to get right, I like to use the framework PSSK:

Personality - Give your chatbot a personality
Steps - Explain clearly the steps you would like it to take with the user
Style - Explain the style of the response it gives to the user
Knowledge - Explain the knowledge it will use 

Here's my instructions for the 'Children's Story Book Generator':

Here's another example of the 'Configure' page and the 'Instructions' for my Powerpoint to SOLO taxonomy tasks GPT. For this GPT, the user simply uploads a Powerpoint and the GPT will analyse the content and create 4 tasks based on the 4 levels of SOLO taxonomy. 

Tip: Don't try to make a universal GPT that 'does it all'. 

You will get much better results if you make GPTs that provide specific atomic solutions. 

Then build up a repository of these atomic solutions to help automate your workflow and help other teachers. 

The technical skills needed to create an app are no longer needed. 

I am excited as more and more teachers with pedagogical expertise and 'on the ground' wisdom build solutions for their colleagues. 

This is a huge flex for teachers!
