How to Avoid Business Coaching Scams?
Have you heard of "Business Coaching Scams"?
There are a lot of bogus business coaching services online. When searching for business coaching, be careful and do your research. Scams may be pretty intimidating and distressing. You may feel you're up against it with no chance of escaping. It's nice to know that you aren't alone and that there are people who can help you.
There are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
Tip 1 - Choose to work with Business Coaches You Already Know
This will help you learn from their years of experience.
Remember, you hired a business coach to help you with a specific issue in your business. They have more experience than you and can help you learn faster.
The first step is to find someone you can trust to help you. This person will look out for your interests and help you figure out what to do. They may also analyze the situation and give you some options.
Remember, con artists might try to scare you into making a decision quickly. They might say you'll lose a great opportunity if you don't act now. It's critical not to be rushed into making a hasty conclusion.
Unless I know what specific problems I can help solve and whether this potential client is a good match for us to work together, I don't make any money in my situation. In reality, competent and experienced business coaches allow potential clients to choose whom they want to work with. After all, high-ticket business consultants aren't salespeople!
Tip 2: Find Out What Others Said About their Experience working with this Business Coach.
Looking for a business coach you already know and trust can be challenging. I got this.
Thus, the second tip is about "DYDD" - do your due diligence to minimize the chance of you being scammed or ripped off.
How about searching online for the name of the business coach you're looking for and then looking for words like "review," "scam," or "complaint." This might help you see if there are any red flags that you should be aware of.
It's worth looking at whether any complaints have been filed against a business coach since no complaints may indicate that they are genuine. Occasionally, complaints might be signs of underlying concerns. It's usually better to avoid caution and seek someone else if you're ever hesitant about a business coach.
It's also essential to search their social media accounts for information about them. The worst-case scenario I've seen was someone claiming to be a business coach who had a lot of dog and cat photos on their social media profile. No posts about business coaching or clients' success stories. That's another red flag.
So, if you read this article as a business coach, what are you posting on your social media profiles? Are you posting stuff that is related to business coaching or something else?
Tip 3: Check the Business Coach's Credentials
First, I acknowledge that this can be tough because, strictly speaking, there’s no licensing requirement to become a business coach.
But the business coach may have completed some certification or license programs. For instance, as one of the 11 Licensed Trainers in Neuro-Linguistic Programming in Singapore, you can locate my name using the following link and search for "Singapore."
As a Certified & Licensed B.A.N.K. Trainer and iOS (Intelligence Operating System) COach, you can also locate my name using the following link below:
It would sound more credible than someone listing their credentials on their websites or social media profiles. Why? Scammers often lie about their credentials.

Do some online research about the type of certification your business coach says they have, and even talk to some former or current clients about their experiences with the business coaching program.
From my experience, referrals are still the best way to find a business coach you can trust. Ask your friends or colleagues if they know of anyone who could help you. This is actually how I got most of my business coaching clients because transferring trust is a lot easier than hunting for new coaching clients using paid advertising and marketing strategies.
If they have had a positive experience with a business coach in the past, then that's a great place to start.
Tip 4: Ensure a Written Coaching Agreement Is Put In Place
As a lawyer, I can't help but mention that all coaching agreements should be in writing. This will help protect you and your business coach in case misunderstandings, or unmet expectations occur.
When you're about to engage in business coaching services, ensure a coaching agreement is in place. The coaching agreement should include the time for coaching sessions, how often you will meet, what type of coaching format will be used, what topics will be covered, and the fees involved.
From my experience, having a coaching agreement in place is also an excellent method to assess the effectiveness of my clients' business coaching program.
Of course, after our coaching program (and it's understood that my client and I no longer work together), I will request that my clients fill out a survey so that I may improve my business coaching services for future customers. Of course, you realize this form can also be used as a testimonial if you are an experienced business coach, don't you?
Tip 5: Trust your Gut and Be Prepared to Walk Away
It's often said that if something feels "wrong" or too good to be true, it probably is. However, sometimes your gut feelings can lead you to great opportunities or experiences you wouldn't have otherwise had.
It's important to recall that each individual has their intuition and feelings. The key is to trust your instincts and follow your heart. If something feels right, go for it! But if something feels wrong, don't be scared to walk away. In any case, following your intuition is almost always the best course of action.
Conclusion
I hope you find my helpful advice as you work with a business coach. Remember, doing your research and conducting due diligence before working with anyone is critical. Take your time making a selection and trust your gut feeling every time. And if you have any concerns, don't hesitate to back out.
There are a lot of fake business coaching services out there, but there are many fantastic, honest professionals who can assist you in reaching your objectives. It's up to you to locate the best one for you!
