How B-Corp Certification is Shaping a New Era of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability
As well as the words ‘ESG’ and ‘Sustainability popping up more than ever, you may have also started notice the term B-Corp. B-Corp certification is a relatively new movement that aims to redefine what it means to be a responsible / sustainable business. B-Corps are companies that meet strict standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. They are certified by the non-profit organization B Lab, which assesses a company's impact on workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.
The B-Corp certification is more than just a seal of approval though. It's a way for businesses to demonstrate their commitment to using their resources and influence to create positive social and environmental change. B-Corps are also required to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders, not just shareholders anymore.
B-Corp certification is rapidly gaining traction around the world. As of 2021, there were more than 4,000 B-Corps in 77 countries, representing a diverse range of industries, including finance, manufacturing, technology, and retail. As of today, there are now currently over 6000 Certified B Corporations in more than 80 countries and over 150 industries.
One of the ways that B-Corps are shaping a new era of corporate social responsibility and sustainability is by setting an example for other companies to follow. By demonstrating that it's possible to be profitable while also being socially and environmentally responsible, B-Corps are challenging the traditional notion that maximizing shareholder value should be a company's primary goal.
B-Corps are also using their influence to advocate for policy changes that promote sustainability and social justice. They are working with governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to address issues such as climate change, inequality, and human rights. By taking a proactive stance on these issues, B-Corps are demonstrating that businesses can be a force for good in society.
In conclusion, B-Corp certification is shaping a new era of corporate social responsibility and sustainability by redefining what it means to be a responsible and sustainable business.

A great article Camilla and really interesting to understand that B Corps are judged on creating both positive environmental and social change. Even better to read that there has been an increase of 50% in B Corps since 2021!
