How bad is Green Washing? Really...

Carbon exchange? Carbon trade? God bless planet Earth

Carbon trade related movement is a dangerous distraction from reducing emissions and contributes to growing scepticism of companies' #sustainability or #ESG claims. Despite 70% of the global economy being covered by net-zero pledges, there is a lack of clarity about what net-zero is:

  1. No credible external verification
  2. Companies focus more on the offsets (net) than on reducing their emissions (real zero)
  3. Targets are too far, e.g. 2050.
  4. Scope of emissions don't cover the full company's value chain
  5. Quality of carbon offsets is not set

Green washing – really? obviously lost!

  1. Lack of regulations, awareness and slow pace of climate friendly alternate innovations led us into this situation – no big corporates want to destroy the planet. “Hey remember, we employee millions of people and we also have children and grandchildren to leave the planet in good shape with!"
  2. In a few years, the roads will be blend with EV’s, thus oil & gas companies taking a huge hit in their revenues, stock fall & job cuts. They are trying to prepare for a survival in near future. Meanwhile, they say "hey we understand we are a bad lever for the planet. We welcome solutions to survive, we are learning, we can’t cut it off all in one day and be a good climate samaritan. Let’s understand the whole world still moves because we exist. You have food on the table, you have lights and internet, you move from point A to point B, you can travel to visit your families, you can still paint those colourful nail polish – all because we enable it. Those ships and airplanes are not running on batteries today. So, let’s understand we co-exist as a necessity today, and let’s innovate alternate solutions to help us reduce the damaging footprint. Let’s evolve and we painfully understand it’s a time taking process."
  3. Large CPG companies are figuring out how to maintain profits while taking eco-friendly measures. “Hey, we are experimenting and learning. Yes, we are going through a learning curve thus obviously making mistakes. Please remember, if our stock price fall, millions of jobs will be lost, thousands of SMEs who are our suppliers and vendors will be shut down thus affecting millions of families. Collectively, let’s continue to work together and find solutions, we will have to innovate eco-friendly alternatives together and get to accept ‘profit with purpose"
  4. Yesterday’s stay home mom is today’s climate expert, yesterday’s soon to be retiree is todays ESG advisor, yesterday’s CSR champion is today’s sustainability speaker, yesterday’s tech dude is today’s climate tech start-up. There is no limit to real authenticity of those new-born experts. Talk the talkers find it a fashion to speak on Green washing but does it help? Not cool anymore to listen to naysayers!  Social media, sustainability speakers, book writers, conference ticket sellers and universities offering new climate theory certifications are making a run for it. Let Greta Thunberg respectfully continue her campaigns. Let us remember the community need positive dialogues on alternate solutions and eco-friendly innovations. Let us understand “Green washing” is not the real problem to solve here. The real problem is finding innovative and alternate ways to reduce carbon emission at every habits of businesses and consumers. So let’s discuss ideas and solutions to solve that.
