How to Become a Key Person of Influence (KPI) in Your Industry

I am sure you have all heard of the business term "Key Performance Indicator" (KPI) as it is widely recognised. It represents a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively a company or employees are achieving key business objectives. We use KPIs at various levels to evaluate success at reaching targets.

However, I have adopted a new approach - drawing on this concept, becoming a "Key Person of Influence" (KPI) in your industry means setting a standard that others aspire to match or may never even know about.

The Value of Influence

Influence is not about being famous. More recently people talk and think about instagram influencers falling into the celebrity/fame zone.

But this is different!

It's about being selectively famous within your niche. It's about impacting decision-making and thought processes in your field. When you become a KPI, you are the person others think of first in your domain. You become exclusive!

You're the name that comes up in conversations around "who's who" in your industry. This level of influence means that people associate you with the level of performance and expertise they want to align with.Who wouldn’t want this right! I know I continue to strive to be a KPI as they are super special. Out with the old and in with the new. These are your heavy hitters and the people companies hunt down to support their businesses.

So how do I become one?

  1. Develop Deep Expertise: Specialise in an area that you are passionate about and where you can genuinely add value. This deep dive into your subject matter is the foundation of your influence.
  2. Share Your Knowledge: Influence grows when you share your expertise. Write articles, speak at industry events, participate in webinars, or teach courses. The more you share, the more recognisable your name and expertise become. This is a no brainer!
  3. Network Purposefully: Build strategic relationships within your industry. Connect with other influencers and thought leaders. Your network can amplify your influence through collaborations and endorsements.
  4. Create Impactful Solutions: Don’t just be an expert—solve problems. Whether through a product, service, or innovative idea, being known for solving key issues will elevate your status as a KPI.
  5. Maintain Visibility: Keep yourself visible in the digital and physical spheres. Regularly update your LinkedIn profile, contribute to industry newsletters, and maintain an active presence in industry forums.

The Ripple Effect of Being a KPI

Being a Key Person of Influence means more than just personal recognition. It means setting a benchmark in your field that influences how others operate, innovate, and grow. It's about creating a legacy of knowledge and inspiration that transcends your personal achievements.

Becoming a Key Person of Influence is a rewarding journey that not only elevates your professional life but also contributes significantly to your industry. It positions you as a central figure and thought leader in your field and as a guiding star for peers and newcomers alike.

Step up, step apart from everyone else and become that person.
